You’re the proud owner of an Original or iPhone 3G, but you just can’t help but ogle your mates 3GS ever since he got it. With it’s fancy new compass, voice recognition and video recording, your Original/3G is starting to look a bit tired. Problem is, you’ve got at least another couple of months on your contract left and the networks are charging extortionate amounts for early upgrade. You could try buying a PAYG iPhone 3GS and sell your old and busted iPhone taking the hit on the difference, but that’s probably just as much as the early termination/upgrade fee O2/AT&T wants from you. So for the time being you’re stuck with an iPhone 3G.

OK, it’s not like that’s the end of the world, it’s still an incredibly capable device, plays some great games and can use almost all the apps that the 3GS can. But what about those features that set the 3GS apart? As an Android handset owner, I took unnatural joy in the soon-to-be-released turn-by-turn GPS app! The app allows voice commands, fuzzy search (aka you don’t know the exact location, but know details of an event etc…), and all sorts of fun integrations with maps, traffic and street view. What does all this mean to you? I’m not sure, but as for Garmin and TomTom…

Someone decided to make a response to Verizon’s latest viral campaign. IMO, I just want the iPhone to break away from AT&T so I have a choice of a carrier.  But until then, other carriers will just have to compete using other phones.

Ever since the iPhone’s release, fan-boys on both side of the aisle have slung insults about superior/inferior features, stats, etc… Someone just decided to kick it up a notch.

Verizon and the new poster-child of cool, the Android OS, are rolling out the ‘Droid phone in November.

So probably everyone has seen the scene in Tomorrow Never Dies where James Bond controls his BMW with a touch pad on his Q branch Ericsson. Well the dream of controlling your car, racing around a parking lot, could soon become a reality all thanks to an iPhone app. iDriver allows you to control the ‘Spirit of Berlin’, a mini-van kitted out for autonomous and  remote control ‘drive-by-wire’. Needless to say it’s not the most pretty car in the world, but it’s impressive none the less.

Google Wave can now be used, for those lucky few of you who have a Wave invite, on the iPhone and Android devices. Going to Wave.Google.com pops up a screen telling you that your browser is not officially supported but you can proceed ‘at your peril’:

I can certify that it does indeed work for the majority, so if you’re on Wave and have either an iPhone or Android device head on over to Wave.Google.com for some mobile Waving action.

The iPhone Dev-Team have just unleashed their latest update to the custom firmware creation tool for Pwnage Tool 3.1.4. It’s now compatible with iPhone 3.1.2 and supports iPhone 2G/3G/3Gs as well as iPod touch 1G/2G but unfortunately not 3G for all you lucky enough to have the newest touch in your claws. Pwnage Tool is however Mac only and that’s the way it’s going to stay according to the Dev Team, but for all those on Windows boxes there’s always Blackra1n or a mate to help you out.

The iPhone 3GS is now supported out of the box in PwnageTool 3.1.4 (or if you have upgraded to 3.1.x in iTunes)

The iPod 2G is still supported in PwnageTool 3.1.4 but you must already be jailbroken (we’ll update this if there’s a big demand from non-jailbroken ipt2G owners)

The iPod touch 3G is NOT supported

GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G(S) with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service then you should only update your device with an .ipsw that is made with the new PwnageTool. There are no second chances with this. You need to remember that PwnageTool will provide an upgrade path to newer versions of the iPhone software in the future.

There is no Windows version of PwnageTool it is a Mac OS X tool only, we are not developing a Windows version of PwnageTool.

Tower defence games are a thriving genera on the iPhone with many, many games, some good, some great and some just plain bad. Today were going to be taking a look at one of the better TD games, Star Defence from ngmoco.

Star Defence follows the usual tower defence premise: bad guys, aliens in this case, invade and it’s your job to stop them dead in their tracks. The stand out feature for Star Defence has to be it’s 3D rotating worlds that you fight on. Instead of a field arena, you get small planets on which the path of the enemy is fixed. This takes some getting used to at first, especially if you’re used to the classic kind of playing field provided by the excellent Fieldrunners, but it’s well worth the effort. The graphics provided in Star Defence are really quite good and look akin to the graphics provided by Command and Conquer Generals, allowing you to zoom right in on the action for close ups with the units which are all pretty well animated. Adobe has just unleashed a free Photoshop mobile app for the iPhone. Now you could say they’re a bit late to the party of photo editing apps on the iPhone with mainstays like Photogene, Brushes and Layers already filling that space in one form or another. Adobe has one thing going for it above any feature other apps have, however, and that’s the photoshop name. With photoshop a household name (and verb), any app with Photoshop in the title is instantly recognisable, even if you’re not a graphic artist.

I’m a massive fan of the Command and Conquer series and have played every one of them since the initial iconic Command and Conquer. So I was pretty giddy when I heard the news that EA is bringing the Red Alert RTS universe to the iPhone with Command and Conquer Red Alert for iPhone and iPod touch. All the best bits of the franchise seem to be there, with combat between Allied and the Soviets taking centre stage. From what I can tell the mechanics of the RTS action on the small screen have been well worked out, including base building and R&D elements that help you upgrade your weaponry. But enough jabbering, we’ll get a review out to you as soon as possible, but in the mean time hit the jump for some tasty screenies. (more…)
