COuples OPerating in video games

COuples OPerating in video games

No longer are the days that gaming was only a favorite pass time for “The Guys.” Working at a video game store, slowly but surely I am seeing more and more females getting into the world of gaming. Sometimes it just takes a spark of interest to get “US” hooked (Speaking from experience.) And the magic word is…. (drum roll please *dun dun dun dun*) CO-OP!!!

My Mission = to search for games with local co-op campaigns or entertaining two-player options to interest both you and your significant other so you may have the best of two elements, quality time together and gaming.

Team Fortress 2 gains new member created hats and weapons

COMMUNITY IS CREDIT TO TEAM! Remember a couple months ago when Valve opened its doors to the creative Team Fortress 2 community?  They created a website for anyone with 3D modeling skills to contribute their own hats and weapons. Well, just yesterday, a new patch went out and added some of those community made hats and weapons.

Here are some stats one these new weapons:

  • The Homewrecker – 2x bonus against buildings, 75% power against people
  • The Pain Train – 2x capture rate, 1.1x damage from bullets
  • The Dalokohs Bar – Max health increase by 50 for 30 seconds – Heavy

Equality, or Lack Thereof

Equality, or Lack Thereof

Today’s article is genuinely on a very serious subject matter, so forgive me if I abandon my usual flippant tongue-in-cheek. In part. For a bit. If I can.

But seriously, this is no joke. This is Real Talk.

Xbox Live Bar Tag

As many of you may have heard, Xbox Live recently granted gamers the right to display a number of details about their personal details online, among them race, gender, and sexual orientation. And while in our culture we are moving in an ever-more accepting direction to different faiths and creeds, beliefs and ways of life, one of the most hostile environments for acceptance and change is in the quite faceless and odds-evening ether of the internet.

Gamers are, by and large, classified as nerds, geeks, dweebs, and generally socially unacceptable social outcasts. And while we’re growing to be more and more socially acceptable almost by the day, as evidenced by the popularity of titles like COD:MW2 and the Halo franchise, Madden and Tiger, we are still a subset of humanity that is commonly made fun of, mocked, and not allowed to sit at the cool table in the lunchroom.

Microsoft bringing USB storage to Xbox 360

Microsoft bringing USB storage to Xbox 360

Joystiq hits the gaming community, specifically the Xbox 360 community, with the type of news that will bring joy to gamers’ pants all over the world. Finally, in the near future, you will be able to hook up your own USB storage device to your Xbox 360.  Now you will have even more space to put all that content you’ve been downloading from Xbox Live. Isn’t that great? Oh but wait, there are some catches. Go past the break to learn them.

Eric Cartman singing Poker Face on Rock Band 2

Eric Cartman singing Poker Face on Rock Band 2

Two of my favorite things have just mashed up so nicely together.  Lady Gaga and Eric Cartman.  In the video below, you can see and hear what it’s like to play one of the new downloadable songs on Rock Band. I think this is one of the greatest mash-ups I’ve experienced since peanut butter and strawberry jelly Smuckers.

Btw, tonight is the start of a new South Park season. Watch it!

Humans vs. Zombies 2 at UNCG!

Humans vs. Zombies 2 at UNCG!

As fellow pixelatedgeek staff writer Justin has already tweeted, today marks the beginning of Humans vs. Zombies 2 at UNCG! If you haven’t already heard about the game (which is sweeping across colleges in this country), essentially, HvZ is a massive LARP that creates a zombie apocalypse on your own college campus.  You start off as a human and must compete in challenges, stun zombies, and generally stay alive for a week at a time.  If you get bitten by a zombie (the game usually starts off with one or two zombies known as the OZ (Original Zombie) and goes from there), you have 30 minutes to bask in the dwindling remainder of your humanity before you succumb to the will of the horde.  Zombies bite humans by tagging them, and humans can stun zombies for 15 minutes (during which the zombie may not interfere with the game in any way) via Nerf guns or sock bombs (rolled up socks that are not unlike sticky grenades from Halo).  If you live on/work on a college campus and desire to play, contact the original creators and moderators and get yourself a game going — it’s a lot of frenetic fun that recreates one of the greatest horror survival scenarios out there.  And if you’ve never LARPed before, have no fear!  HvZ is kind of LARP-lite and introduces you to a lot of  basic gaming mechanics that frame your fundamental LARP experience.  Check out the website at humansvszombies.org and get the dead man’s party started!

Comic Jumper – Gameplay Video, Concept Art, and Sound files

Mike Wilford is a wonderful guy.  After seeing the shaky cam vid of Twisted Pixel’s newest project, Comic Jumper, on Joystiq, I immediately asked him for a copy of the video.  The very next day, not only did we get a copy of the video, but we also got screenshots, concept art, and sound files!

Enjoy the 10 minute long video! It’s such a treat. For concept art and sound files, go past the break.

Remembrance of Things Rolled: My Gaming Past

Remembrance of Things Rolled: My Gaming Past

Hey friends.  I thought I’d take a break from my normal articles concerning the creation of an ideal gaming situation and instead give you a little bio/background information on yours truly.  I come from a long line of gamers: friends and family have both shaped my overall gaming history and have helped shape the gamer/DM/GM/storyteller that I am today.  For today, I figured I’d give you a little insight into where I came from and invite you to reflect on your own gaming past and recognize the influences you’ve encountered along the way.  It’s like doing your own family tree and genetic history of gaming.  And you know I totally roll d20s in my Punnett Square.  Boom.
