Review: Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

The Fifth Element director Luc Besson returns to the realm of sci-fi with an expansive, super-expensive adventure whose creativity overshadows its more uneven elements, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The movie is based off of “Valérian and Laureline,” a sexy French comic book series featuring a pair of futuristic crime fighters who travel through space to uphold the law. What could have been a movie full of new philosophies and themes ends up just being really pretty and having no substance.

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark Comics Coming Back

It’s been over ten years since Elvira had her own comic book, but Dynamite Entertainment has revealed that The Mistress of the Dark is getting a brand new comic, not to mention trading cards, posters and many other macabre collectibles featuring the horror icon made famous by actress Cassandra Peterson! No word just yet to when all these new items and comic series will begin showing up in stores, announcement at Comic-Con maybe. But one would assume this October is the time to start keeping your eyes open.

Binary System Podcast #89 – Night Vale Bonus tracks, and San Diego Comic-Con!

This week Welcome to Night Vale demonstrated once again that they don’t understand the meaning of the word “hiatus” because they gave us both an excerpt from the upcoming Night Vale book It Devours, AND a teaser for the new “Conversations With People Who Hate Me” podcast. This brings up one of the few times that the twins come down on opposite sides of an issue, because Kathryn likes to read the comment threads of news articles to find the rare moments of intelligent discussion and well-worded viewpoints, and Elizabeth doesn’t because she thinks they’re cesspits of humanity.

After that they nerd out about Saga for a bit (the cover to issue 44 is all kinds of neat) and then spell out their plans for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con! They’ll both be there, along with Official Binary System Photographer Captain Slack (otherwise known as Kathryn’s husband Nathan) to do some interviews, take a pile of photos, and report back on Nerd Mecca. Keep an eye out here and on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram!

GALLERY: EVO 2017 Show Floor

This past weekend I had a blast at The Evolution Fighting Championship Series 2017, Evo 2017. The event took place this past weekend from July 14 -16 2017. Spectators and competitors alike flocked to the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada to watch and compete in the largest fighting game tournament in North America. I ran into some known faces on YouTube, cosplayers, & many more! Enjoy!

As always, if you recognize yourself or the cosplayer, please chime in, we love to give credit where credit’s due!

Dual Review – Aquaman #26 and Batwoman #5

I was only going to do the Aquaman review this week because I am completely obsessed with a big fan of Stjepan Sejic. But then I found out that another artist I obsessively stalk follow, Stephanie Hans, is on the Batwoman book, so I had to do a quick review of that too, because it’s so, so pretty. See below for preview pages and a review of Aquaman #26 and Batwoman #5.

2017 Hugo Awards – Three Novellas

The clock’s ticking; we only have a few more weeks before the 2017 Hugo Award ceremony in August. Click the jump for a review of Lois McMaster Bujold’s Penric and the Shaman, Kai Ashante Wilson’s A Taste of Honey, and Kij Johnson’s The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe.
