Take 2 Interactive invited us over to their booth to check out their upcoming title Mafia II. It’s been 8 years since the release of the original Mafia on PC and it looks like the sequel is going to be worth the wait. Move past the break for more.
Mafia 2 is an open world game from 2k Games set in the early 1950′s. The game’s main character, Vito, has recently returned from war and is looking to move up a bit on the social ladder. So naturally his good old buddy, Joe, recruits him into the seedy underground world of the mafia.
When I booted up the demo I was treated to a typical open world scene of cars driving around and people milling about. The first thing I noticed was the art direction in the game. Much like the hit show Mad Men, the true beauty is in the details. Everything I encountered in the game world was true to the period. The cars, the clothes, the guns, and even the coke bottles brought me into the world of the 1950′s. I quickly commandeered a car and drove to the way point to meet my buddy Joe. After a brief interlude of hocking cigarettes we were accosted by a rival gang. Pushed to far, Joe shoots the leader of the little group and we chase them to their hideout. We met up with some more members of our gang and after a cut scene the shootout was on! The cover system I found to be very fluid. I enjoyed sliding up to cover and peeking around the corner to shoot people. The guns were also nice and authentic, for instance the machine gun had a ridiculous mount of kickback. The details in the game really stood out to me and I am looking forward to getting my hand on the full version.
