“Lady Gaga’s broad creative talents and the way she connects with her fans in her own, unique manner made her a natural choice for Polaroid,” said Stephen Miller, co-CEO of PLR IP Holdings. “Polaroid has had a special connection with its customers for years, we are delighted to be partnering with Lady Gaga to continue with that tradition and bring new and exciting products to the next generation.”

Tell us a bit about yourself:

Well I’m a recent graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Sequential Art Masters program and have been doing freelance artwork for the past few years. I’ve been published with companies, like Slave Labor Graphics, Mascot Books, Zuda Comics and 803 Studios. But what I’m most proud of is my first graphic novella that was distributed through Arctic Wolf Publishing, called My Dog is a Superhero. The book’s an old school Saturday morning inspired tale about a ten year-old afro-puffed diva-to-be, named Ashleigh who finds a cute little blue dog who turns out to be the kid-hero Wolfboy. And much to her chagrin, she ends up helping him catch other evil aliens disguised as pets, like the villainous Kid Squid. The comic came out last year and I’m hard at work on another one. I also just finished up a children’s book called Nadia’s Jewelry Box for HeartHead Publishing which should be out this month. I spend the rest of my time reading comics, playing Murmasa, and co-hosting a podcast for SCAD called Seqa Lab, with the occasional party thrown in for good measure.

I also have an unhealthy love of late 90’s pop music.

What’s been your inspiration for art?

Oh man, alot of things. Which I guess could be boiled down to three categories: mainstream superhero comics, manga/Japanese anime, and American cartoons. Though lately I’ve been getting heavily into French comics and animation, in particular the work of Pierre Alary, Gobi, and Rudolph Guenoden. Other artists that currently rock my brain are Stuart Immonen, Tite Kubo, Inio Asano, Darwyn Cooke, Ryan Ottley and most importantly my close friends: Jason Reeves, Chris and Jonathan Mullins, Jarrett Williams, and Kevin Burkhalter. Being around other good artists is probably the best motivator, that and desire to pay back my student loans.

What supplies do you use for your art?

Plain old typing paper, col-erase blue pencils, and my computer. Photoshop and Manga Studio have changed my life.

Any Tips and Tricks for art?

Just the classics, draw. Alot. Seriously, like everything around you, the more you study the real world the better you are at exaggerating it in your comics, illustrations, etc.

Any advice for a beginners?

It kind of ties into my last answer, but sketch all the time and don’t fall in love or spend hours on the first couple of drawings you do. I find that young artists are so caught up with perfecting a piece, that they don’t spend enough time planning it out. You’re going to make mistakes regardless so why not spend a good bit of time coming up with solid ideas before deciding to finish a picture. It’s kinda’ like thinking on paper, the more you do, the better the results.

The Crew here at Pixelated Geek wants to continue featuring these artist but we need your help. If you or someone you know would like to be featured as the Artist of the Week please drop me a line andrew@pixelatedgeek.com

Artist of the Week: Jeremy M. Jack

Deviant Art

What’s been your inspiration for art?

As a child I was very inspired by Disney. Then came Don Bluth and he was like the ANTI-Disney. When i saw The Secret of Nihm I felt my whole life had changed… After which I saw the work of Norman Rockwell and art made a difference to me. Then came comics, and Jim Lee revolutionized the way I drew. Then Jae Lee blew my mind by proving comic art didn’t have to follow a specific “style”. Right now I am HUGELY inspired by greats like Matteo Scalera and Sean “Cheeks” Galloway. In fact I am taking Sean’s Schoolism course this semester and I can’t wait! As far as people close to me, I must give credit to my cousin Travis Story, who gave me the greatest tales to tell through my art. And my good friend Clayton Bodley, who gave me the best characters and a real drive to persue my art.

What supplies do you use for your art?

While my pieces look very digital in the end… I begin with pencil (usually non-photo blue) then detail in darker pencils. My lines are done on high quality tracing paper with ink. I then scan the lines, level them in Photoshop CS4, and color in the same program. Actually pretty simple if you think about it.

Any advice for a beginners?

It may sound cliche’ but DRAW DRAW DRAW… And when you wanna quit, KEEP DRAWING! Study art… In every genre. We can learn from every part of the field. Don’t be discouraged if you see art that you feel is better than your own. Learn from it. Give credit to those that help you on your journey. Have integrity. And most important HAVE FUN!

Just the other day, former LEGO Master Builder, Mariann Asanuma, sent me an invite to one of the coolest and creative LEGO groups on flickr. This group is named “CubeDudes.” It’s basically a new way to build people, characters, and other beings in a cube fashion. It’s kind of like cubeecraft but with LEGO bricks. Most CubeDudes so far have been created by MacLane.

Now, to the untrained eye, a person can pass this off as something simple to build. But after meeting with Mariann, she mentioned that the hardest things to build are usually the smallest. When building small LEGO art work, you have to find just the right piece to get it done. Check out some of the LEGO figures below.
