Review – Does the 3DS Replace the DS?

Somethings just seems to go together, peanut butter and jelly, Maro and Luigi and Nintendo and handhelds.

The portable market is in a bit of a shake up thanks to the Android and iPhones, and Nintendo’s DS system is in need of a revamp. The new 3DS certainly doesn’t stray far from the working predecessor, it’s certainly an improvement, and later this year it’s going to be given the XL treatment. Does the 3DS replace your current DS? Or is the 3D just a gimmick?

Nintendo announces the glasses-free 3DS

The onward march of the ’3D’ machine is starting to encroach on the handheld market. Nintendo has just announced that the a 3D successor to the Nintendo DS and DSi will be unveiled at E3 in June this year. The Nintendo 3DS as it’s currently called, although that may change, features glasses-free 3D and will feature backward compatibility for your DS games. The mini-3D marvel is expected to hit retail before the end of the current fiscal year, meaning before end of March 2011.

Time to start saving your pennies and making sure you’re DSi feels loved, before you put it up on the grand-adoption site that is the ‘Bay.

Gamestop offers Jirachi on February 27

Pokémon fans are being offered another chance to get a free Pokémon starting this Saturday, February 27, at Gamestop. Anyone who brings in their Nintendo DS with a copy of Pokémon Pearl, Diamond or Platinum will be able to receive the free gift. Jirachi, a dual-type Steel/Psychic legendary Pokémon,  is available until March 13. A nice bonus since March 14 is the release of the new Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver bundles. Anyone that takes advantage of the free Pokémon will have access to a special training route on the Pokéwalker, the pedometer accessorie included with the new games.

Pokéwalker to be package with Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver March 14th

Do you remember the ancient Pocket Pikachu or perhaps the Pokémon Pikachu 2. Well if not they were essentially Pedometers that would reward you with Watts based on how far you walked. You would then use the Watts to feed your Pikachu. The concept was pretty neat actually and was a great time waster through High School.

Well with the March 14th release of Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver the game will include a Pokéwalker. The Pokéwalker is an updated version of the previous released Pedometers. Instead of only having a Pikachu you can actually transfer any one Pokémon from any of the 2 games. Much like previous Pokémon Pedometers the more you walk the more Watts you get. The Watts are used within the Pokéwalker to encounter and catch wild Pokémon or search for hidden items, and can be transferred into Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions to unlock new routes. The Pokémon in the Pokéwalker will gain experience points as the player walks, and can even go up one level when they are transferred back into the game. Players also can wirelessly connect two Pokéwalkers to trade items.

Looks like I’ll be picking up another Pokémon Game. I wonder how my old Pocket Pikachu and Pokémon Pikachu 2 are?? It’s been about 5 years sense I last fed them…… do the batteries last that long??

A Genre that has always intrigued me was the Pocket Fighter. From the days of the first Gameboy with it’s Pocket Fighter: Fist of the North Star. It was fun and portable something that at the time Street Fighter wasn’t. The Genre of Pocket Fighters have been slowly evolving to being an almost complete port of what you would come to expect of a Full Fledge Fighter. This time around it’s Naruto, while Naruto is certainly not new to the DS the Shippuden Series is. Packaged as a Pocket Fighter how does the Shippuden Series Translate.

Autobots Transform and Rollout. I know this week marks the official release of the Bayformers 2 Revenge of the Fallen. Strangely there is more then meets the eye in terms of releases. With Fight Night and Overlord entering the ring it should be a pretty interesting week. Though the Movie section certainly could use some help, minus the Chuck Jones Tom n Jerry Release!!! Feel free to post a comment if anything is missing.
