Bloons 4 is out – Kiss your productivity goodbye

Screen shot 2009-11-22 at 7.39.27 PMOne of the most mind numbing yet fun flash tower defense game out on the net has a 4th sequel.  James introduced Bloons 3 to me and some other co-workers some time ago and it was hard to put down.  But, now with new towers, new upgrades and more new tracks, it’s going to be another while till I put this game down. Damn you animated monkeys! Why must you be so adorable and fun!

To numb your mind, click here for the Ninja Kiwi.

Weekly Tech Wrap-up

wtwu

It’s that time again, time to review some of my cherry picked smaller stories of the week for those that might have missed them. This time round we’ve got an Adobe Flash update that doesn’t suck. OK, sucks a little less. Flash 10.1 beta was unleashed to the willing public with GPU video acceleration for certain Nvidia cards on Windows, but perhaps more importantly reduced CPU usage across all platforms. What does this mean? YouTube that doesn’t make your Mac or PC red-line that’s what. A step in the right direction Adobe, maybe Flash isn’t a lost cause after all. I’ve certainly seen some improvements on my netbook and Mac. (more…)

Zoom Quilt 2

Zoom Quilt 2

This is one trippy art project.  Zoom Quilt is a collaborative group art project where each artist submits their art pieces into this long looping flash movie.  The flash movie continously zooms into each art piece making it seem like you’re going through a very weird world. Check it out.

Oh, and if you’re under the influence of some “stick, icky, icky”, you’re welcome.

Flash? In my Cellphone? Tell Me More (aka sucks to be iPhone)

Get Adobe Flash PlayerSanta must have some dirt on the iPhone this year.  Come end of year/early next year all smartphones, with the exception of the iPhone, will be running a mobile version of the Flash 10 player.  To quote the source:

Adobe describes Apple as “closed device” and continues to offer a fig leaf, but given Apple’s general stance on opening up new development platforms on their device, it seems a tad unlikely.

Well, I guess that says it all. Maybe there can be an unholy Silverlight/iPhone hybrid in the future… /shudders

So You Want to be a Flash Game Developer?

Online Flash Game

Lets admit it, we made games for fun in school, in our free time when bored, or as a collaboration with friends. But now, its time to get serious… now is the time to learn how to make money doing what you have been doing for free until now.

Finding sponsorship, hosting and exposure for your game are the top three struggles you will face when trying to bring your work to the masses (and getting a little cash in your pocket). There are more flash hosts than you can shake a stick at… Kongregate, Newgrounds, Armor Games… all my usual stomping grounds.

Freelance Flash Games News has compiled a list of articles and resources that may be a worthwhile read for the up-and-coming developer. Where to sign up, what to provide, and how to discuss money with sponsors are all covered.

Take a brief read over these articles, or visit the parent article, if you happen to be interested in flash game development:

We are living in the future [Augmented Reality]

oherlihy-last-starfighter-sm

In the future, you can view multiple photos in one photo frame. Just you wait.

If you ever needed an example of what the future will be like, just look around you.  You’re living in it.  The TV can be watched live on the internet, you can talk to a loved one face to face while not being in the same continent, and you can call anyone, anywhere in the world, at anytime. (Unless you have AT&T).

Ever since I was kid, I’ve been amazed at what technology and science brings us.  I loved watching Starship Troopers: Rico’s Roughnecks, Beast Wars, and even VR Troopers because each show used advanced computer graphics for their time.  Everyday, I look through news sites and blogs to find the newest in video games and gadgetry. And now, while I was searching the intertubes, I find this video:

Using Flash Papervision and Actionscript 3 for the web, we can now do what is called “Augmented Reality” (more…)

A Very Creative Way to Quit Your Job

A 2k Austrailia Game dev decided to move on with his life. But before doing so, he made the above game to let people know… “I QUIT!” To play, use the arrow keys to move around and the spacebar to jump. Please note that if you are prone to epilipsy, you might not want to play this game. More after the break.

Anatomy of a Black Hole

blackholeI’m always intregued by our investigations into space and time filled with wonder and things that we can barely comprehend never the less understand. One of the most curious and awesome phenomena in the universe has to be the Black Hole. Their existence is something of an enigma and the theory behind them is quite complex. The more we know about them the more questions become uncovered. Are they a gateway to another dimension or galaxy, a worm hole if you will? Can space and time really cease to exist as we know it at their center? What would happen if you were trapped in the gravitational pull of one of these monsters and are they only a totally destructive force? Well for those of you who are curious about these things (you’re a geek why wouldn’t you be?) here’s something I Stumbledupon the other day, a brief and informative walk through of the Anatomy of a Black Hole. Well what are you waiting for then, head on over and you might learn something for today?
