Binary System Podcast #97: Friday the 13th the Series – The Fangirling

Thirty years ago today, a little TV show called Friday the 13th the Series aired for the first time (…in Canada, it didn’t show up in the US till October 3.) It was scandalously gory and violent for network TV at the time, and ended up being nominated for several Emmys, and we adored it. We’d make lists of all the cursed objects we could remember, wear out our VHS copies (…shut up…) and write fanfiction (shut UP) where Micki and Ryan finally got together.

Listen in as we break down a few of our favorite episodes, racing the clock to get in as much fangirling as possible.

Review: Curious Goods – Behind the Scenes of Friday the 13th: The Series

It’s just a few more days until the 30th anniversary of the first episode of Friday the 13th the Series. As a long-time fan, I’m kicking myself for the fact that a book about the series was released almost two years ago, and I’m only just noticing now.

When I picked up a copy of Alyse Wax’s book Curious Goods – Behind the Scenes of Friday the 13th: The Series, I expected an episode list, maybe with a rundown of writers, directors, and guest stars. But what I got was exactly what I want out of a fan book: a lovingly-detailed summary of all 72 episodes, plus interviews, photos, and tons of fascinating details about the background of the show and what went on during the making of each episode.

Friday the 13th the Series – 30th Anniversary Screen Cap Gallery

The title of this TV show confuses an awful lot of people, but forget about Jason and the mask: Friday the 13th the Series (sometimes called Friday’s Curse, just to make things more confusing) was a Canadian production in the late 80s, featuring a curiosity shop of cursed antiques, a devil’s bargain, an aged mentor, and two “cousins” with unbelievable sexual chemistry. It was awesome. And this month is the 30 year anniversary of the first episode (well, September 28 if you’re looking at imdb, October 3 if you’re looking, um, anywhere else.)

In celebration, Binary System Podcast presents a gallery of ads, promo shots, and a pile of screen grabs, because we’re still completely obsessed. What started out as a plan to grab snaps of 80s costumes, action shots, amazing hair, and goofy villains, quickly spiraled into getting all the evidence that Micki and Ryan were meant for each other. COUSINS BY MARRIAGE. TOTALLY LEGAL.

Binary System Podcast #96: The Kitchen Sink Episode

Since there’s no Night Vale to recap this week we figured we’d just talk about everything else, starting with our family in the path of Hurricane Irma (spoilers: they’re fine) and upcoming travel plans that are making our recording schedule interesting.

After that we talk about a Transformers game that Kathryn’s ridiculously addicted to very enthusiastic about and she’d like you to play too so she can get more points you can enjoy it as well. Then we discuss why we haven’t finished watching Defenders yet, and it has something to do with this Netflix show about drug deals, we won’t say which, but it rhymes with “Narcos” and it’s (appropriately) addictive.

Also we try to talk briefly about this amazing 80’s show called Friday the 13th the Series, and fail. To talk briefly. We even had “BRIEFLY” written in our notes and underlined and we still went on and on.

The 1980s were a thing of beauty when it came to horror and slasher films. It’s really the decade that started it all. Some are really good, but sadly most are not. Movie Issues: Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection

Friday the 13th is one of the longest running horror franchises to date. It mainly focused on a boy who, due to negligence of the camp staff, drowns at Camp Crystal Lake. Decades later, the lake is rumored to have a “death curse” and becomes the setting for a series of mass murders. Jason Voorhess is featured in all the films, as the killer or the motivation for the killings themselves.
