The Best Books of 2016

2016 may not have been the best of years, but it saw the release of some amazing books. And since Elizabeth has been focusing more on her artwork these last few months (check out her Daily Doodles on instagram) this year I get to keep the entire “Best Of” list for myself, myself, you hear?! Mwa ha haaaa!

*Ahem* Sorry, got a little carried away there. Click the jump for a list, in no particular order, of my ten favorite books from 2016.

Binary System Podcast #57 – The Orbiting Human Circus (Of The Air) #1

Yes, we’re a little behind schedule; the second episode of “The Orbiting Human Circus (Of the Air) has already dropped, and we’ve only just now gotten around to watching the first one.

So how was it? It’s…interesting. There are things we liked about it, and things we definitely didn’t. After a quick recap, we talked a little bit about the current Transformers: Revolution storyline (which we did not like, and we’re definitely not happy about it.)

To round it out we talked about Sense8, Hannibal, The Descent, and Skottie Young’s delightfully disturbing I Hate Fairyland.

Review: Feeding Hannibal – A Connoisseur’s Cookbook

Happy Halloween! Last day for the October Scary Book Reviews. You know what’s a really scary topic? Cannibals!

I remember I was partway through Season One of the TV show Hannibal, and I was already hooked on the charismatic killer and dazzled by the gorgeous food he would serve to his unsuspecting guests.

Some of his gourmet dishes were so intriguing, I did extensive research to find out what they were. Well, sort of extensive. Okay, I think it was exactly one google search (“hannibal episode 10 ham with hoof”), but it took me right to “Feeding Hannibal”, a blog by Janice Poon, the food stylist for the show. Setting up beautifully prepared meals for each episode is a complicated job, and Janice’s blog is overflowing with recipes, sketches, behind-the-scenes stories, and of course details about what she used to make it look like Hannibal was cooking someone’s liver. Or lung. Or arm, complete with hand and fingers.

Best of all, Janice reserved some of the tastiest bits of trivia for her latest project, Feeding Hannibal – A Connoisseur’s Cookbook. Two hundred and forty full-color pages with everything you need to make your own Hannibal-themed dishes.

Anybody hungry?

Binary System Podcast #56 – The Walking Dead Season 7 Premiere

So, The Walking Dead, huh? How about that episode? Lots of important character development there. The cinematography was pretty good, and the lighting director really had to…oh who am I kidding? That episode was brutal and we’re still mad!

Sit back for a half hour of the twins going AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Binary System Podcast #52 – Ramble Some More Ramblings

No Welcome To Night Vale recap this week, since the Binary System Podcast duo has been traveling all over time and space this month. Well, all over space anyway. Okay, we each spent a week in Florida visiting the ‘rents. The point is, we’re tired.

Not too tired, since we were able to read the latest issues of Tranformers MTMTE and Marvel’s Civil War II (warning: massive spoilers and speculations on our part to follow), and then watch The Night Manager series, the last season of Hannibal, a tiny bit of X-Men: Apocalypse, and the first two episodes of season two of Broadchurch (ouch, not sure how much more of that we can watch.)

And then Netflix had to go release the next seasons of Luther and Penny Dreadful, so now we’ve got even more to catch up on so we can talk about it on this podcast. It’s a tough job blah blah somebody’s got to blah blah so on and so forth.

Binary System Podcast #40 – WTNV #89 “Who’s A Good Boy, Part 1”

“Who’s a good boy?” Not really a question that you’d expect to strike fear in the hearts of podcast listeners. But it does.

Once we shook off the Welcome To Night Vale heebie-jeebies we talked about Daredevil and The Fall, and then about the final seasons of Hannibal and True Blood, which we haven’t watched yet because some streaming platforms are biding their time. And by biding their time we mean stingy and by some we mean Amazon Prime.

Binary System Podcast #39 – Alice Isn’t Dead #6 “Let’s Break Into A Police Station”

This week we recap the latest episode of Alice Isn’t Dead and ask the question: if you’re not a criminal mastermind, how do you break into a police station? (Answer: loudly. Before you can change your mind.)

We also discuss how season two of Hannibal is just amazing, and how season six of True Blood is just godawful.

Binary System Podcast #33 – WTNV #86 “Standing and Breathing”

In this week’s Night Vale episode we got to see a lot more of these Strangers that aren’t doing much, except standing there…and breathing… andthensuddenlyappearingrightnexttoyouwithoutmoving YIPE!

After that we talked about what we’re catching up on (Daredevil, House of Cards, and Hannibal) and then drop all the spoilers on Crimson Peak because Elizabeth finally watched it and we had to talk about how amazingly pretty it is. And don’t worry, we don’t make one single mention of Tom Hiddleston’s butt. Except here. Sorry. (Not sorry.)
