Review: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

We thought we said good-bye to Harry Potter in 2011 with the final film installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. We cried, we laughed and we let go as an entire generation made peace with the end of the adventures of the world famous boy wizard. A few years back rumor and rumblings begin surfacing that author J.K. Rowling was thinking of getting back into the Potter game. Rumor became fact, and fact became the new Harry Potter spin-off series/prequel: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. And with great rejoicing we are welcomed back into the world of Harry Potter once again.

Comic Issues #208 – Jocks of the Geek World

The Superbowl has come and gone, and that means we’re in the mood to talk about…anything except football. So we talk about all the geeky sports we’d rather watch, including Quidditch and a rousing game of Calvinball.

After that we talk about the resounding “meh” that is the Fantastic Four teaser, and take a look at the new Conan and Red Sonja title, Justice League #38, and More Than Meets The Eye #37. Along the way we also shake our fists at the Girl Scouts for waving cookies in our faces, and dare the Harry Potter fans to send us hate mail. (Except not. Well maybe. Only if it’s really good hate mail.)

Not your usual Christmas stories

A very Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates it from Kathryn and Elizabeth! And to everybody who doesn’t celebrate it, happy book-reading!

By this point most people have already read A Christmas Carol, or The Night Before Christmas, or any of a handful of great, classic Christmas stories. So we thought we’d list a few fantasy stories with a little bit of Christmas in them that aren’t usually thought of as Christmas books. Some of them are nice, and some are definitely naughty, so if you’re determined to read something Christmassy, you’ve got something other than The Grinch to curl up with.

Valentine’s Day: Our favorite literary couples

A dual post from Kathryn and Elizabeth

When talking about great couples from sci-fi and fantasy books, there are a lot of obvious ones:  Harry and Ginny, Westley and Buttercup, Drogo and Daenerys, Katniss and Peeta (or Gale), and Bella and Edward (or Jacob), to name a few.

We decided instead of listing all the famous ones, we’d talk about some of the other sci-fi and fantasy couples from our favorite books.

(Except that Kathryn just HAD to go and include Ron and Hermione. ~ Elizabeth)

(I regret nothing! ~ Kathryn)

Mon Frere presents “Hufflepuffed!”

This evening, the fellas and lady of Mon Frere proudly present our Harry Potter-themed sketch comedy show, “Hufflepuffed!”  In this overarching narrative, we examine the world of Harry Potter from some “alternative” perspectives.  Even The Boy Who Lived himself explains the story as it would be if a certain creator of “Law and Order” (let us just call him “The Dick Wolf”) had some stew in the pot.  Mix in some confused and embittered perspectives from Helga Hufflepuff’s disenfranchised house, and you have “Hufflepuffed!”  We’ll post some videos a while after the show; until then enjoy our poster below!

This week on the Comic Issues Podcast, our heroes make their way to Platform 9 3/4 as they board the train to Hogwarts. They take on all the dark wizards as they discuss the impact of the Harry Potter franchise on today’s culture. Afterwards they put on the Sorting Hat to get sorted into their own houses. Finally the final showdown begins as they have a verbal wizard’s duel for best character, book, and movie.

This week, the Laird of Lore makes his way back to the podcast with some amazing trivia. If that wasn’t enough fun, we are also joined by special guest Kristal Plein.

However, this is just a mere piece to our full coverage on this Harry Potter week. A very special review of the latest movie will debut later this week!
