iPhone App Review: Photoshop Mobile

Photoshop.com MobileAdobe has just unleashed a free Photoshop mobile app for the iPhone. Now you could say they’re a bit late to the party of photo editing apps on the iPhone with mainstays like Photogene, Brushes and Layers already filling that space in one form or another. Adobe has one thing going for it above any feature other apps have, however, and that’s the photoshop name. With photoshop a household name (and verb), any app with Photoshop in the title is instantly recognisable, even if you’re not a graphic artist.

Read on to find out how it handles. (more…)

iPhone App Review: Documents to Go

IMG_0030You can already read many document and image formats right on your iPhone thanks to the pretty good built-in QuickLook. Apps like AirSharing and of course Apple Mail on the iPhone use it and allow you to view attachments and documents that you simply must see on the go. But what happens when you want to edit those documents? There’s no built-in ability for editing documents on the iPhone and this is where DataViz, the people behind Microsoft Office compatible products on a myriad of other mobile operating systems, steps in. TomTom iPhone kit priced for UK

TomTom iPhone Kit

TomTom iPhone Kit

Handtec has the TomTom iPhone kit priced and available for pre-order. How much you ask? £113.85 that’s how much. Ouch, is all I can say. Considering you can get standalone TomTom units for about that price, or even less if you shop around, I’m not sure a iPhone TomTom kit represents all that much value if it ends up at that price (official pricing and availability has yet to be confirmed). Sure it’s meant to include the software, maps and a cradle with GPS enhancer/power, but when you get to the price of a standalone then the value of such a purchase really comes under pressure. When it comes to something for a car, having a dedicated device isn’t really a problem as storage isn’t an issue.

For those who aren’t sure what I’m on about check out the promo-video below:

Spotify on the iPhone

IMG_0233Lots of sites have been buzzing about the news that Spotify has submitted an app to Apple for approval for release in the App Store. Most are reporting that this is the first Spotify app for the iPhone and while it may be the first submitted to the App Store, it’s certainly not the first Spotify app on the iPhone. That crown goes to Spot, an open source spotify client for iPhone/iPod touch available in Cydia and has been since 12th July (publicly). Spot seemingly functions in a very similar fashion to the reports of the just submitted Spotify app allowing you to stream music to your iPhone if you have a Spotify premium account (sorry free-loaders this one’s a premium service only). Using backgrounder you should also be able to run it in the background so you can get your Spotify on whilst you go about your day. So if you’re a premium Spotify user and want in on the iPhone Spotify action now, check out Spot available free in Cydia.

iPhone App Review: Tube Exits

iPhone App Review: Tube Exits

Most Londoners use the London Underground affectionately (or not so) known as the Tube. Illustrated by the recent RMT Tube strikes, the UK capital grinds to a halt when the tube is down demonstrating just how important the tube is in the daily lives of Londoners. Tube Exits is an app squarely aimed at Londoners and frequent visitors to the capital. It has the simple aim of telling you which carriage of the tube to be in to be nearest to the point of exit from the platform.

TweetDeck brings client sync between iPhone and Desktop

TweetDeck brings client sync between iPhone and Desktop

TweetDeck, one of the big cross-platform desktop Twitter clients has released an iPhone version. Not only does TweetDeck for iPhone bring a uniform feel and fit from desktop to iPhone but it allows you to sync between the two using TweetDeck user accounts. With this respect anything that you change on one or the other gets pushed out across all your TweetDeck clients. This is something that isn’t possible with separate clients and means that tweets that you’ve read in one place aren’t marked as so in the other.

TweetDeck brings the standard features of TweetDeck including multiple user accounts, multiple columns including the ability to set a search term or group as a column, URL shortening and both TwitPic and YFrog integration. You can even shake to refresh and follow/unfollow people right from the app.

IMG_5006

There isn’t much here that differentiates TweetDeck for iPhone from other Twitter apps on the iPhone apart from syncing with TweetDeck on your desktop. The visuals are pretty slick it has to be said and remind me a lot of the card UI implemented on the Palm Pre where you can swipe between columns. The app is however free and doesn’t leverage ads to support it as yet and so it has that in it’s corner but with iPhone 3.0 released today and push notification available immediately we may see some push notification from existing iPhone Twitter clients (here’s looking at you Twitterfon!) that might just make TweetDeck for iPhone a little behind the curve. Still there’s no reason that of course TweetDeck couldn’t pull Push out the bag, but I would have thought since it launched last night/today that if they were going to do it, it would already have it built in.

So is TweetDeck for iPhone a game changer? Not yet. If you use TweetDeck for your desktop which I do, then I must admit having all my desktop clients and my iPhone in sync does make it a tad more convenient but I wasn’t that bothered that they weren’t in sync before this arrived. Will this replace Twitterfon Pro on my iPhone? Perhaps, it’s definitely a nice UI, but I’ll have to wait and see if sync really makes that much difference to me and what iPhone 3.0 holds for us on the Twitter side.

New iPhone App is a DJ’s Best Friend

http://www.vimeo.com/4353898

They make iPod apps for everything these days; from text and IM systems to using the iPhone camera to email while you drive. So it’s only natural that someone make an app that simulates the vinyl experience. Created by Theodore Watson, Spinning Vinyl uses the iPhone and iPod Touch’s built-in accelerometer to control how fast the record is spinning. Apparently, it’s best for a 2nd generation iPod Touch given that iPhones and the 1st Generation Touch have flat backs that don’t really allow for spinning but it is still an impressive app.

Finally, an iPhone App that lets you pee and email – Email ‘n Walk

img_0002

If you’re one of those types of people that have many emails to send, receive, write, draft, and delete and not much time on your hands to get it all done, may we suggest the new Email ‘n Walk iPhone app.  This new app, by Phase2 Media, will make sure you know where you’re going or where you’re aiming your piss at while you write your emails.

email-n-walk-iphone-app-300x450

Right now, the app can only create new emails.  Once you click send, the subject line and e-mail message is copied from the app, and put into the real e-mail app.  Once there, just select the recipient(s) and click the send button and your done.  Now you’ll no longer bump into people, bump into your dog that you’re walking, bump into lamp posts, or missing the urinal by a couple of inches while you draft up that e-mail that needs to go out ASAP.

E-mail ‘n Walk is free from the iTunes App store.
