Star Wars: The Battle for Hoth coming to an iPhone near you

Star Wars: The Battle for Hoth coming to an iPhone near you

Love Star Wars? Got an iPhone or iPod touch and are a fan of Tower Defence games? Good, because the mother of all Star Wars battles is coming to Apple’s iPhone OS.

Star Wars: The Battle for Hoth, as the name suggests, takes you into the thick of the action from Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. In development by FluffyLogic, the Bristol, UK-based games studio responsible for the critically acclaimed PSN TD game Savage Moon, The Battle for Hoth looks to combine the best elements of the Star Wars franchise including the iconic AT-ATs with the classic TD formula. For those unfamiliar with the concept of TD games, the aim of the game is simply to stop the flow of enemy units from reaching the other side of the map, or in this case from destroying the shield generators. Devilishly simple in principle, yet extremely engaging and addictive to play.

Fans of TD games will find a lot to love with 17 different units to build, each with several possible upgrades and user selectable firing orders that allow you to target a specific subset of encroaching enemy units. As commander you can also dig trenches either to funnel enemy troops into a kill zone or to give your infantry more protection.

The Battle for Hoth packs in 15 levels set around the expanded environment of the ice planet Hoth with two game modes, Classic and Fortress. On your first run through each level you’re limited to Classic mode in which you can collect extra Command Points by destroying enemy units to spend on new units to reinforce your defences. Once a level has been beaten, Fortress mode can be employed for subsequent plays, where you essentially have a fixed number of Command Points and therefore units at your disposal.

Star Wars: The Battle for Hoth is shaping up nicely and if it plays anything like Savage Moon, then it’ll be a must buy for TD fans and Star Wars fans alike. Check out the gallery below for some more screenshots and a full unit list.

ngmoco's "We Rule" Available Now on the App Store

I’ve been gaming on the iPhone since I got the darn thing. There were a couple of games that were just fantastic and most came from ngmoco:). Well ngmoco’s latest game We Rule has just hit the App Store.

Developed by Newtoy (Age of Empires, Halo Wars), players are put in charge of their very own whimsical kingdom full of castles, farms and, of course, loyal citizens.  Players will raise crops, collect taxes and trade with neighboring realms via the social connectivity of ngmoco’s Plus+ Network.  Wise kings will act as city planners and landscapers, and build, grow and craft their own social microcosms.

iPhone App Review: Star Defence

Posted by: |

Tower defence games are a thriving genera on the iPhone with many, many games, some good, some great and some just plain bad. Today were going to be taking a look at one of the better TD games, Star Defence from ngmoco.

StarDefenceStar Defence follows the usual tower defence premise: bad guys, aliens in this case, invade and it’s your job to stop them dead in their tracks. The stand out feature for Star Defence has to be it’s 3D rotating worlds that you fight on. Instead of a field arena, you get small planets on which the path of the enemy is fixed. This takes some getting used to at first, especially if you’re used to the classic kind of playing field provided by the excellent Fieldrunners, but it’s well worth the effort. The graphics provided in Star Defence are really quite good and look akin to the graphics provided by Command and Conquer Generals, allowing you to zoom right in on the action for close ups with the units which are all pretty well animated. Command and Conquer Red Alert coming to an iPhone near you!

C&CRA

I’m a massive fan of the Command and Conquer series and have played every one of them since the initial iconic Command and Conquer. So I was pretty giddy when I heard the news that EA is bringing the Red Alert RTS universe to the iPhone with Command and Conquer Red Alert for iPhone and iPod touch. All the best bits of the franchise seem to be there, with combat between Allied and the Soviets taking centre stage. From what I can tell the mechanics of the RTS action on the small screen have been well worked out, including base building and R&D elements that help you upgrade your weaponry. But enough jabbering, we’ll get a review out to you as soon as possible, but in the mean time hit the jump for some tasty screenies. Read On

Rock Band for iPhone – Watch out Tap Tap Revenge

Posted by: |

Looks like Tap Tap Revenge has finally met its match. EA Mobile has hit the iPhone with their famous Rock Band franchise. Two major differences that I see iPhone Rock Band having over Tap Tap Revenge is the 4 player Bluetooth mode and access to more mainstream songs.

iPhone Rock Band will operate just like Tap Tap Revenge. But, just like in the regular Rock Band for consoles, you’ll be able to choose between the 4 main instruments, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vocals. For Vocals, you’ll just be tapping along. Not singing into the built in iPhone mic. Maybe they’ll do that for a future version of the game?

I wonder what Tap Tap Revenge can do to compete with EA and Harmonix’s music tapping genre game. We’ll just have to wait and see.
