The iPhone Dev-Team have just unleashed their latest update to the custom firmware creation tool for Pwnage Tool 3.1.4. It’s now compatible with iPhone 3.1.2 and supports iPhone 2G/3G/3Gs as well as iPod touch 1G/2G but unfortunately not 3G for all you lucky enough to have the newest touch in your claws. Pwnage Tool is however Mac only and that’s the way it’s going to stay according to the Dev Team, but for all those on Windows boxes there’s always Blackra1n or a mate to help you out.

From the team:

SUMMARY:

The iPhone 3GS is now supported out of the box in PwnageTool 3.1.4 (or if you have upgraded to 3.1.x in iTunes)

The iPod 2G is still supported in PwnageTool 3.1.4 but you must already be jailbroken (we’ll update this if there’s a big demand from non-jailbroken ipt2G owners)

The iPod touch 3G is NOT supported

DETAILS:

GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G(S) with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service then you should only update your device with an .ipsw that is made with the new PwnageTool. There are no second chances with this. You need to remember that PwnageTool will provide an upgrade path to newer versions of the iPhone software in the future.

Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.

Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.

At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1.4 capable version of PwnageTool.

PwnageTool will work for the iPhone 3GS

PwnageTool will work for the iPod touch 2G

PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G(S) and the iPod touch (1st Generation and 2nd Generation) but NOT the iPod touch 3rd generation.

For 3G and 3G(S) users who are Pwned, PwnageTool is your key to updating in the future, just remember to never install an update directly from Apple, always use an .ipsw that has been created with PwnageTool.

There is no Windows version of PwnageTool it is a Mac OS X tool only, we are not developing a Windows version of PwnageTool.

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to the iPhone Dev-Team and go get your jailbreak/updating on.

iStat Menus 2.0 Released

Fri, Sep 4, 2009

If you recently upgraded to Snow Leopard you might have noticed a couple of programs not working. One program in particular and one I use daily was iStat Menus. Well you in luck cause today version 2.0 makes it debut. If you’ve never tried iStat Menus I would suggest taking it for a spin, it essentially let’s you monitor your computer from Heat to Upload and Downloads speeds. It becomes pretty useful especially during these hot summer days.

One word: Efficient? These mofos had it all planned out. I wonder how Apple will step up their security on displayed products. I hope they don’t ruin it for the rest of the class. O_o

Snow Leopard to Upgrade or Not?

Thu, Aug 27, 2009

snow_leopard_header

While I would have to admit how pumped I am for Snow Leopard, at the same time I’m a little concerned. I use my Macbook Pro daily for work and I need it running in tip top order. I’ve already started doing some research concerning the compatibility of my favorite and most used Applications. It seems that Parallels should be in the clear but what about other programs? Apparently there are questions though regarding Photoshop CS3. Supposedly Adobe has tested it but there are some conflicting reports. Here’s hoping everything works but then of course that’s the problem with being an early adopter.

Perian pref pane updated for Snow Leopard

Tue, Jul 28, 2009

Perian114Perian the Swiss army knife of QuickTime components has just been updated to 1.1.4. A relatively minor update with the stand out features being DTS passthrough and support for 10.6. Those looking forward to Snow Leopard like I am can now rest assured that Perian will follow us through the update. I’m not sure how many people still use QuickTime for playback these days with VLC having just hit the big 1.0 but I still find it better for playback of a few odd files.

To get the update just open up the Perian preference pane and run check for updates or jump on over to Perian.org for a direct download.

No doubt you have seen the below Apple commercial.

It’s a blatant poke at Microsoft’s latest campaign “Laptop hunters.”  Well, my friend thought that the Apple ad needed a better ending.

loginox

Isn’t it time you’ve changed your login screen wallpaper? Yes, it was pretty when you first booted up Leopard but now it’s old.  You need some new hotness on your desktop before you login or when you logout.  Well, a new simple app for your Mac is now available from Omid Pajuhideh at Loginox. As long as the picture you select is 2560 x 1600 and has a ratio 8/5, you can enjoy a different Login screen look. Try it out!

Will iPhone 3.0 End the Need to Jailbreak?

Thu, Apr 23, 2009

iphone30There was a time when I didn’t think Apple listened to my prayers for the iPhone. Steadfastly sticking to it’s line of MMS is not important, who needs copy and paste and why would you want to do anything but have a headset connected to bluetooth. With iPhone 2.0 the only way to get some of these things, and more I might add, was to jailbreak your phone. Apps such as SwirlyMMS, BiteSMS, PDANet and Clippy tried their best to add what Apple wouldn’t and succeeded to a certain extent, but it’s never as good as when it’s actually part of the system. iPhone 3.0 for me, delivers on many fronts. Stereobluetooth is there, lacking controls at the moment, but it’d be a stupid omission should Apple not put it in (mind you I wouldn’t put it past them). Cut, copy and paste is also implemented in a pretty good way, system wide and in all apps that support text entry and viewing. Finally I will be able to copy and paste things into messages and posts. MMS has also been added which will be a boon when I want to send pictures to less geeky friends who aren’t with the always connected vibe. Bluetooth and cable tethering are also available at the moment, whether that makes it into the final release however is anyone’s guess. Enhanced message management has also been added to the messaging client including forwarding of messages and deletion of individual messages. Having played with iPhone 3.0 beta I can say that all these features are integrated nicely, of course what else would you expect from Apple, and seem as if they’ve been there from the off. One of my favourite features that 3.0 will bring is something that most Mac users will already be accustomed to, Spotlight. Having switched to Mac for my personal machine a year and a half ago, Spotlight really struck me as the most useful feature of OSX compared to Windows. Spotlight on iPhone is just as good, shrunk down to an intuitive and pretty rapid (for a mobile device) search tool. I jailbroke my 2.2.1 iPhone specifically so I could use search in mail, the one thing that I thought was really missing from the iPhone mail client. With searching of almost everything on the iPhone, Spotlight for me, along with copy and paste are the reason to jailbreak at the moment.
