Role-playing is not stat-grinding

Role-playing is not stat-grinding

The role-playing genre has begun to stagnate.

It’s hardly crippled. Some giants still garner worldwide attention, such as the Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Fallout franchises. Even after the massive spectacle of genre excess that was Final Fantasy XIII, people still anticipate the next title. But these and lesser-known RPGs are islands in a teeming sea of shooters and action titles, often on the verge of being swamped.

And yet “RPG elements” have proliferated to the point of an industry standard. Most games include at least a token narrative executed with varying degrees of proficiency. Many also include some form of level-based advancement, perks, and/or equipment. Some even include the dreaded moral choice system. In a very real sense, the original niche of role-playing games has become the dominant paradigm.

Yet role-playing games, particularly “classic” role-playing games, continue to define themselves by rigid accordance to traditional mechanics. This conservatism probably represents the greatest handicap to the genre. Just as other games have begun to adopt “RPG elements,” perhaps it’s time for RPGs and their fans to seriously consider abandoning some of their own.

Garrus plushie!

Thanks to a significant fraction of the Mass Effect fanbase, Garrus Vakarian, everybody’s favorite turian Space Punisher, made the transition from chaste token alien crewmate to full-blown love interest in defiance of anatomical and, indeed, biochemical barriers. Top 5 Sequels of This Generation

Top 5 Sequels of This Generation

The holidays are almost upon us, and the games couldn’t be any bigger.  Sequels are bombarding us around every corner; only time will tell if they can live up to their predecessors.  In the hopes that they will (I’m looking at you Fallout: New Vegas), here are some sequels from this generation that delivered on their promise.

5) God of War 3

There is probably a more ergonomic way to do this!

As big, bold, and bloody as anything God of War fans could hope for, the “final” game in the trilogy truly operated on an epic scale. You literally fought a Titan and then killed said Titan. Last time I checked, that was pretty big. The game delivered on everything it promised and gave us more of the giant jerk we’ve come to love. By love I of course mean enjoy playing as him and cutting people in half.

In Defense of Choice

In Defense of Choice

“It seems as though the floodgates are beginning to creak open on inFamous, including the revelation of “Karma Moments” – a tracked morality system with effects on player progression. It wasn’t meant to be funny, but for some reason we found it very funny, because like many mechanisms of this kind your choices tend to come down to being an omnibenevolent supercherub or the Goddamned devil.”

Tycho Brahe, on inFamous.

Well, that pretty much sums it up, doesn’t it? What more can be said? When no less a luminary than Tycho himself derides the moral choice mechanic as a cheap, hackneyed, and two-dimensional trope, who am I to deny him?

Disdain for such moral choice mechanics has become almost as omnipresent a fandom meme in certain circles as hatred for Japanese RPGs. Critics decry their moral extremism, forcing players to play a saint or a Saturday morning cartoon villain. Another common criticism paints them as cheap ways introduce fake content into a title, squeezing out a few more repetitive hours of game time for 100% completion. And even in cases where the moral choice seems significant, some critics claim their practical effect on the storyline is almost nil, bar the ending cutscene. Can the mechanic be defended, against the weight of such animosity?

I think so. Read On

Top Five Reasons Mass Effect 2 is going to melt your face

Here are my top 5 reasons that Mass Effect 2 is going to leave you bare footed. (Because it will rock your socks off…..see what I did there)

5) The Cinematography

YouTube Preview Image

How many times are you playing a game and you are really enjoying it but find the camera angles a bit lacking? I mean even in BioWare‘s last game, the amazing Dragon Age , I would find myself with a camera aimed awkwardly at my chest during half of the cut scenes and almost all of the dialogue shots. But the shots in Mass Effect 2 look like Spielberg is behind the helm. I mean there are shots that are actually creating tension on their own!

Mass Effect 2 – New Trailers

Posted by: |

Mass Effect 2 is hitting stores January 26 2010, if you played the first you know that it is going to melt your face off with pure space joy/guns/ missions/ and alien interactions (wink wink).

From a preview stand point here are some reasons why it will be the first major game of the decade and most of it is due to Bioware developing a solid game and improving on that.

I can’t tell you how important storytelling is for a game that could well overtake your life. Mass Effect 2 could have been a great game where you fly around a shoot stuff, but because of the story it was a game that you CARED about where you went and what you shot. I’m not going to spoil parts of the game with people who haven’t played it, but in the first there are some truly heartbreaking and tough calls you have to make as Shepard. This time around it seems a lot darker and more grit than Clint Eastwood making coffee. Will this direction effect the grand arc of the story poorly or be and added bonus? I’ll bet most people are fine with this change, and I am as well as long as it is supported in the story and not badass for badass’ sake.

3 more new trailers past the break.
