PAX East 2011 Post-Omegathon report

Well, PAX East 2011 came and went. There were laughs and tears and — OK, so there were no tears. It was PAX, after all. But there could have been tears, if I weren’t such a gracious loser. Besides, I had to keep my mascara intact all weekend seeing as the camera guy for the Frag Dolls was following me around all weekend and making me feel like an A-lister.

The Frag Dolls put together a documentary-like video about my experiences as an Omeganaut. And even though (spoilers) I didn’t win, I still had an amazing time participating. With only 28 participants selected out of 69,500 attendees, it really was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Keep reading to hear more about my experience and to see Ubisoft’s video about me.

[PAX East 2011] – Trenched

Double Fine was on the floor showing off its newest game, Trenched, which is set to be released on Xbox Arcade.

The game focuses around an up-to-4-player co-op that pits you and your teammates against the mono-vision forces.  You and your teammates are part of a group called the mobile trench brigade.  You control a mech suit, complete with all the bells and whistles you could hope for.  You are also able to mark places to build defense turrets and satellites.  As you shoot down the mono-vision forces you collect tubes that allow you to upgrade your defenses.  The game stresses actual cooperation (I know it sounds crazy, right?), and, no matter who actually shot down the enemy, you all share the goods.  While talking with the Double Fine rep he commented how many of the guys designing the game had found that they had been playing less and less games online because of the atmosphere many games foster.  To try and get a more enjoyable time out of the online experience the company is really trying to make gamers play as a team, instead of griefing each other. [PAX East 2011] – 30 Minutes of L.A. Noire

Rockstar Games is nothing if not bold.  With L.A. Noire, Rockstar is making another bold choice, creating a game that forces gamers to pay meticulous attention to detail to solve crimes instead of simply telling gamers who the bad guys are and giving them a gun.  In L.A. Noire, you play as Detective Cole Phelps, a recently promoted detective who has just returned from World War II.  The case from the game at PAX East was entitled “The Red Lipstick Murder” and was inspired by a real case from Los Angeles during the time period in which the game is set (1947).

[PAX East 2011] The Gang’s All Here

This is Bob posting under Rett’s wordpress account because Bob is an idiot and forgot his password AFK.  ANYway, we’re all here in Boston; after some glorious air travel (ask Rachel about Vomit McPukerson who sat next to her) and hilarious hijinks finding our hotel (hint: it’s by a wharf), we’re warming up in a Best Buy in downtown Boston.  We found some sweet iMacs on which to check Twitter, Facebook, and a Pokedex or two.  We’re happy to be here; Rachel, JJ, Rett, and I will be providing any and all gooey and geeky information from the east coast’s largest geek culture convention.  Check back regularly for posts with the “[PAX East 2011]” tag and look for the trademark logo in the header image.  Before we leave for the night, here’s what we’re most excited about to report:

  • Our cover of Brink
  • Our coverage of the Jane McGonigal keynote
  • Potential SW: TOR drop date
  • Interview with Wizards of the Coast
  • And many more!

For now, here’s a pic of our beautiful faces:

PAX East Omegathon 2011

PAX East Omegathon 2011

With PAX East 2011 just around the corner, everyone on the internet is all a-Twitter (pun intended) about the panels, the parties, and the concerts. Except for me. For one omega-exciting reason: the Omegathon. Because randomly selected alongside 19 others out of tens of thousands of pre-regged attendees was none other than yours truly.

My cohorts and I will be pitted against one another (or rather, my as-of-yet unknown partner and I will be up against the nine other pairs) in five rounds of gruesome, grueling, brawling competition. A veritable melee wherein we will fight to the death–or rather, to Germany–in the most difficult games since Ikaruga. All for the grand prize of airfare and three nights’ lodging at GamesCom 2011, along with $1500 in spending money.

Read on to see the schedule and list of  brutal (and might I add violent) games on which we’ll be competing.
