PSX 2015 Preview: Dead Star (PS4)

The hottest genre in gaming right now is Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas, or “MOBAs” for short. Dead Star is a top down twin-stick space shooter that has up to twenty players participating in competitive matches online. Before I get any deeper, let me start by saying that I’m absolutely awful at Dead Star. I was completely demolished during my demo at PSX, and since then I’ve tried honing my skills at home in Dead Star’s beta. I have yet to be on a winning team, but I think I’m slowly starting to get the hang of it.

But in any case, Dead Star’s main focus is its MOBA mode, which is in this case is called its “Conquest” mode. During the keynote at PSX, however, developer Armature showed off its new mode “Escape Run”. You can check out the trailer for the new mode below, but read on for a breakdown of Dead Star’s Conquest mode.

PSX 2015 Preview: Randall (PS4)

Continuing the trend of interesting 2D-platformers, Randall, by developer We The Force, is a Metroidvania-style platformer that focuses more on the Metroid side of the genre. For those who don’t know, Metroidvania is a style of platformer that relies on gated progression and back-tracking. In other words, some areas in the game will be inaccessible until you discover abilities that will allow you to progress further through the game.

Randall puts its own twist on the Metroidvania genre by limiting what the eponymous Randall can do on his own. Instead of giving Randall new abilities, he has to use the abilities of his enemies to accomplish his goals.

PSX 2015 Preview: Klaus (PS4)

The 2D-platformer is possibly the most iconic and prevalent genre in video games today. At times, it seems like there’s another one being released every day. So coming across a unique 2D-platformer feels like a rare treat, and Klaus might very well be that treat. Developed by La Cosa Entertainment, Klaus is a 2D-platformer in the vein of Thomas was alone, however the main aspect that the two have in common is that you control two separate characters with different abilities and attributes at the same time to get through levels.

Klaus does everything you’d expect a platformer to do, except that there are times when Klausthe eponymous character himself, will actively rebel against the player.

Hands On Impression – Transformers Devastation

I’ve been attending San Diego Comic Con International since the late 90s and there is one booth that always seems to be the first stop. The Hasbro booth is not only one of the largest booths, but you can’t help but stop and admire the rather large collection of Transformers as they are more then meets the eye.

While doing my routine stop, I happened to notice something a little different this year, there has been TVs in the past, but this one featured Platinum Games: Transformers Devastation. Even better, it happened to be a playable demo. Has Platinum Games made the ultimate Transformers game, or are we looking at another Legend of Korra.

Mad Max – E3 Story Trailer

Leave it to another outlier game at E3 to get me all excited again. Last year it was Shadows of Mordor (another Warner Bros game,) a game that lots of people praised but was totally out of left field and a surprise hit. This year I have a feeling that Mad Max will be similar, much like the movie just a month ago (which was awesome and I highly recommend). Hit the link to see the new trailer!
