Ten Books, a Thousand Pages: Part Two

Welcome to part two of “Ten Books, a Thousand Pages,” where I read the first hundred pages of ten books released this year. (Part one is here.) My rules for the books I picked:

  1. They need to have been written in 2012.
  2. They need to be sci-fi or fantasy titles.
  3. They need to be sitting someplace front-and-center at the bookstore.

With any luck one of these will make a perfect Christmas present for your favorite book geek. Or a present for yourself, if someone put a bookstore gift card in your stocking.

[Review] Dishonored

This article was written by guest writer Matthew Barkey.

Dishonored has been on our radar for a while now. The uncanny look of the strange improvised-mecha Tallboys caught my attention back when they were first shown off. I wasn’t sure how good it would turn out to be, but it looked promising.

Review – Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

Since their humble beginning, the robots in disguise have built a franchise of comics, movies, TV shows, and many video game incarnations.  Everything that’s come from the original Transformers series (Generation One, or “G1″) has been hit or miss, but in 2010 High Moon Studios delivered an old school win with Transformers: War for Cybertron, a re-telling of the Transformers’ Cybertronian origins and their epic battle against the Decepticons. Now the legend continues with the release of Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, and once again the team at High Moon Studios does not disappoint.

Old Classics: Adolf

Adolf, written by the father of manga Tezuka Osamu, is not your basic average manga.  Rather than using fluffy shoujo plot devices or muscly shounen characters, Adolf ties together three different worlds in a political thriller both intelligent and captivating.

Synopsis

Adolf, by father of manga Tezuka Osamu, is a microcosm of three distinct societies during the 1930s and 1940s: Japanese society, German society, and Jewish society.  Using three main characters, Tezuka allows these three worlds to meet.
