Viz Licenses Classic “Sailor Moon” Anime & “Sailor Moon Crystal”

Sailor Moon fans have had a lot to be excited about recently. The upcoming reimagining of Naoko Takeuchi’s manga, Sailor Moon Crystal, is set to start airing this July. Now, Viz Media has licensed the original anime – that’s 200 episodes, three feature films and tie-in specials – to stream digitally, with DVD/Blu-Ray releases set for later this year. Not only that, the series will be uncut: Japanese names and storylines will remain intact, with the original 4:3 aspect ratio preserved. An all-new English dub is in the works as well.

“Sailor Moon” Cast & Air Date Announced

The cast of the upcoming Sailor Moon anime has been announced, and long-time fans have reason to rejoice: set to reprise her role is Kotono Mitsuishi, the voice of the original series’ title character.

The rest of the cast, however, is new to the franchise. Hisako Kanemoto will be playing Ami Mizuno, or Sailor Mercury. Rina Satou is voicing Rei Hino, or Sailor Mars. Ami Koshimitsu is Makoto Kino, or Sailor Jupiter, and Shizuka Itou rounds out the cast as Minako Aino, or Sailor Venus.

New Details Revealed for Sailor Moon 2014

Toei Animation has released its first image for the new Sailor Moon anime, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal, complete with a synopsis and an official title.

Anime News Network provided the following synopsis:

Usagi Tsukino is a second-year middle school girl who is a little clumsy and a crybaby, but she is full of energy. One day, she meets Luna, a black cat with a crescent moon on her forehead, and she transforms into Sailor Moon, a sailor-uniformed pretty guardian of love and justice! As a chosen guardian of justice, Usagi seems to have a mission to find the Illusionary Silver Crystal with the other guardians and to protect the princess.

Meanwhile, the queen of the Dark Kingdom, Queen Beryl, also sends minions to the town where Usagi lives to obtain the Illusionary Silver Crystal, which has immense power. This causes strange events to unfold….

Can Sailor Moon really find the Illusionary Silver Crystal with the other Sailor guardians, and protect the princess…!?

The official Sailor Moon website also released a countdown timer, which is set to start a countdown in four days.  What this timer is counting down for is not yet clear, but fans are nevertheless teeming with curiosity.

New “Sailor Moon” Anime To Premiere In July 2014

Good news for otaku everywhere: yesterday, the official website for Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon‘s 20th anniversary project announced its highly-anticipated new anime series will be streamed worldwide this July, via Nico Nico Douga.

The series, produced by Toei Animation (behind the original five Sailor Moon series of the 1990’s) and directed by Munehisa Sakai (One Piece, Suite PreCureOne Piece Film: Strong World), was originally intended to premiere last summer, but was pushed to the winter of 2013-2014 before being postponed again. The series composition is by Yuji Kobayashi (also of Suite PreCure), with opening and ending themes by idol group Momoiro Clover Z.

New Sailor Moon Series Due in Summer 2013

On the 20-year anniversary of Naoko Takeuchi’s classic manga Sailor Moon, a new addition to the Sailor Moon franchise was announced today.

The new anime adaptation of the Sailor Moon manga was announced at a live event celebrating the series’ 20th birthday by creator Naoko Takeuchi, publisher Kodansha and the idol group Momoiro Clover Z, who will be singing the new anime’s theme. The new adaptation is currently in the works and  slated for release next summer. Kodansha editor Fumio Osano has confirmed that the new anime is not a film project.

Sailor Moon Returns to the US in September

Kodansha USA , announced today the revival of Sailor Moon manga series.  The last edition of Sailor Moon was published in mid 2005.

Brand new deluxe editions of the acclaimed series will be released by Kodansha USA’s Kodansha Comics imprint in September 2011. Out of print for six years, SAILOR MOON re-launches along with Takeuchi’s two-volume prequel series CODENAME: SAILOR V, in print in the US for the first time-making this one of the most highly anticipated manga releases in years.

There seems to be some excitement on the blogosphere about this release, and with Kodansha’s partnership with Random House, I’m sure this release will be a hit.
