3DS goes XL

The 3Ds Portable scene is about to get the extra large treatment. As a man with rather large hands, all I can do is clap in excitement. While most gamers were waiting for this announcement from E3 2012, it seems Nintendo went for the element of surprise.

While few details were released, the long and short of it boils down to the key features. As with any XL treatment the screen sizes have been increased. This also includes a new battery which will out perform a regular 3DS. This time around, the 3DS XL will come bundled with a 4GB SD Card. The system will debut August 19th for $199, just in time for New Super Mario Bros. 2.

“With the launch of Nintendo 3DS XL on Aug. 19, consumers will be able to enjoy the great lineup of current and upcoming games on an even grander scale. Plus, Nintendo 3DS XL gives owners even more real estate on their screens to enjoy entertainment applications like Nintendo Video and Netflix.” ~Reggie Fils-Aime

While not entirely surprised by the announcement, I have to say I’m pretty excited. It’s a good direction to take the 3DS, though the color choices leave a bit to be desired. The handheld market has to battle not only itself but the mobile platform, so you need to consider all uses of the device. While I don’t think watching videos on the 3DS will help solidify itself in the market, it certainly can’t hurt to try.

Be sure to check back with PixelatedGeek.com, as I will be reviewing the original 3DS and it’s software.
