Source Filmmaker Making Gamers Into Animators: Some Personal Favorites

Source Filmmaker Making Gamers Into Animators: Some Personal Favorites

In connection with the release of “Meet the Pyro“, Valve also released the same video-making program previously utilized for their cinematic trailers and videos by Valve animators for years.  The program is called Source Filmmaker and available for free download on Steam.  According to Valve, many of their popular videos such as Portal 2‘s Cave Johnson “Investment Opportunities” and Team Fortress 2‘s “Meet the Team” videos have all utilized Source Filmmaker.

Since the release, many Valve fans have taken advantage of their new tool to tell stories and animate ideas from their favorite games.  Some big names have been uploading videos using the program, such as BioWare cinematic designer Zachariah Scott.  But some of the most astounding results have come from average gamers and fans, and this compilation includes some of my personal favorites from individuals of varying skill and experience.

(Just a heads up, this is going to be a mostly TF2-centric video post)

TF2 Map Design Contest

There are quite a few, read herds, of people who enjoy the cartoon-ish, hat wearing, customization filled game Team Fortress 2.  Quite a few of these people happen to be talented in things other than stabbing people in the back while wearing a paper mask or lighting said spy on fire while shouting incoherent phrases through a gas mask.  If you do love or enjoy TF2 or simply want to dabble in making maps for video games here is your chance.  The folks over at TF2Maps.net are hosting a Payload Map contest.  Participants are encourage to design a single stage payload (a game type) map before April 30.  If you want to do well though your map will need to feature a “dynamic element.”

Looking for a Team Fortress 2 Righteous Bison Code?

I have over fifty emails so far asking if we have any more Team Fortress 2 Righteous Bison weapon codes for Steam. I certainly do. How many exactly do I have left?  Thirty.

Now, before you start bombarding my inbox with emails begging for a code, how about you do this instead?

Help us hit over 1000 Facebook “likes” on our Facebook page.  We are about sixty or so “likes” away. Once we hit 1000 “likes” I’ll post 5 codes on our Facebook wall. From then on, for every 25 extra “likes” I’ll post another 5 until I run out of codes.

Got it? Good. Now, GET TO IT!

Team Fortress 2: Meet the Medic has Dropped, and TF2 is Now Free to Play

After many months of waiting, Valve has officially released the second to last of the “Meet the Team” videos. “Meet the Medic” is one of the longest “Meet the Team” videos and has been creating a buzz all over the internet.  And rightfully so, gamers have been waiting for this to drop since May 2009 when “Meet the Spy” came out.

Also, in this update Valve has made TF2 free to play, with tiered Free and Premium accounts.  If you have “ever spent money on TF2, you have a premium account.  This includes purchasing the game before it was Free-to-Play, activating a retail version of the game, or making a purchase in the Mann Co. in-game store.” It seems like this was hinted at with new free games showing up on Steam last week; this will help keep TF2 one of the most popular war-themed hat simulators since 2007.  Check out the video below!

Team Fortress 2 Uber Update – Day 1: Mobster Monday

Team Fortress 2 is getting a huge patch soon and a new “Meet the Medic” cinematic.  I really wish Valve’s cinematics team would team up with Pixar to create a TF2 movie of some sort.  In traditional Valve fashion, the company will be announcing new additions and changes to the game throughout the week. In today’s announcement called “Mobster Monday,” we learn of six new weapons: three for the heavy and three for the spy.  Also, we have one new payload map called “BarnBlitz.”

Team Fortress 2 Pyro Gender Revealed [Craigslist Ad]

The Team Fortress 2 Pyro class gender has been revealed (unofficially) and is looking for a mate.  Below is a very humorous Craigslist ad about a woman looking for love in the Boston area.  She is a 23 year-old college student that is into cosplaying, D&D, video games, and, of course, TF2.

Not sure why she would need to post a Craigslist ad when she could just meet someone face-to-face at the next PAX East, but alas.

The BLU and RED Teams Step Up to Enter the Grid [TF2 Mod]

Whether you want to admit it or not, let’s face it: TRON: Legacy is a popular film.  It’s so popular that, not long ago, Kotaku decided to hold a Tronify Everything Contest.  One of the submissions, a “Tronified” version of a Team Fortress 2 image, was apparently so popular, that its creator, Chandan Singh, decided to turn it into a full blown TF2 mod.  Entitled TF2 Tron, the first release includes the character classes only; this means buildings, weapons, and extra hats won’t get the TRON treatment, at least not until the next release (whenever that may be).
