Congratulations are in order for Gabe Newell, who has won the 2010 Game Developers Choice Awards ‘Pioneer’ award.

The pioneer award, which first showed at the 2008 Game Developers Choice Awards, is for those who are ‘responsible for developing a vital technology or game design at a crucial juncture in video game history, paving the way for the many who followed them’.

Steam is this vital technology. Not only has it helped the Valve team bring award-winning games like Half-Life 2, Portal and Team-fortress 2 to our computers, but it has brought us a constantly growing list of non-Valve games, from AAA titles to Indie classics.

Gabe Newell will be getting up on stage in front of over 3,000 of the industry’s top developers at GDC 2010, held in San Francisco this March.

Excellent work, Gabe.

Hidden in the latest SDK of Team Fortress 2 is this image of 3 tuxedo jackets wrapped with a flame icon. Could this be a future in-game item to help a Spy not be caught with the ever so annoying (W+MOUSE1) Spy Check? Or is this an unfair item that could essentially ruin an Engineer’s day?

The Team Fortress 2 team at Valve has put a somewhat cease fire on the war. The winners of the war are the soldiers. Because they have killed more Demomen than Demomen killing Soldiers, they have won Gunboats. A secondary slot item that reduces damage dealt to yourself when doing a rocket jump. Congrats, easy mode class.

WAR is happening and both Soldiers and Demomen classes are fully equipped with 3 new weapons. Here’s the quick rundown:

You already know about the sword and shield for the Demoman class and the Improved rocket launcher for pro Soldiers. So, now on to the new stuff that you’ll be playing (or idling) for while in a game of Team Fortress 2.

The last of the 3 new weapons for the Demoman class is the Scottish Resistance.

• Can lay down twice as many sticky bombs
• Can detonate all or 1 group of stickys at a time
• Look at an area of your stick bombs then right-click to detonate
• Not good for close combat due to longer priming time. (0.4 sec)

And now for the Soldiers’ two new toys.

• While you have this equipped as your secondary item, any damage you deal fills your rage meter
• Once you have full rage, you play your bugle horn
• For 14 seconds, everyone around you in a certain radius will deal mini-crits

And now you know what new things lie ahead for you for this free TF2 weekend. And knowing is half the battle.

The war is still going on around the Team Fortress 2 community. But in the end, both sides won. Both classes are getting their new weapons update tomorrow! What do the soldiers get? A new rocket launcher for the pros. Details on this new rocket launcher are as follows:

the Direct Hit has a 70% smaller blast radius than a traditional rocket launcher. But the rockets that come out of this thing move fast and hit hard: 80% faster and with 25% more destructive force. Best of all, for you real sharpshooters, the Direct Hit guarantees mini-crits on airborne targets.

So, what say you Soldiers? Good new weapon? If you say no, then you’re obviously not ready for this kind of firepower. This is meant for people that don’t just spam rockets and hope for a splash damage kill. No, this is meant for those who quickly aim, then fire for a direct kill.

Sword and Shield?! This has got to be the weirdest weapon update I have seen on Team Fortress 2.  Here are some quick notes about this combat kit:

• Lower max health
• When chopping someone’s head off, you get a temporary max health and speed boost
• For every head your chop off, you get another temporary max health and speed boost, but only up to four times
• Right clicking with this kit will make you charge straight really fast. Kind of like a Charger in L4D2
• Charging will not get any crit bonuses
