Review: Dark Force Rising

Timothy Zahn’s  Star Wars: The Thrawn Trilogy books may not be canon anymore, but they still hold a special place in the hearts of folks like me who remember what it was like to wait for almost a decade to find out what happened after Return of the Jedi. I reviewed the first book of the trilogy last year (link!), so it only makes sense to review the second one while we wait for Star Wars: Rogue One to be released.

After twenty-four years of Star Wars books, it’s hard to put into words just how excited fans were when the first Star Wars novel post-Return of the Jedi was announced. Sure we’d had comic books and TV shows set in the same universe. But this was the first story – officially sanctioned by George Lucas himself – that continued the adventures of all our favorite characters, finally answering the question we’d been asking in the eight years since the last film ended: “And THEN what happened!?”

Timothy Zahn’s Heir To The Empire was more than a spin-off. This was a sequel.

Star Wars Expanded Universe No Longer Canon

In a news post on the official Star Wars site, Lucasfilm has announced that the Expanded Universe – the books, comics and video games that have been produced in the past 35 years – are no longer part of the official Star Wars canon.

While Lucasfilm always strived to keep the stories created for the EU consistent with our film and television content as well as internally consistent, Lucas always made it clear that he was not beholden to the EU.

Now it’s official: The six films have been set as the canon, with upcoming films to further expand on the story’s universe.
