Pee-Wee’s back! That’s right boys and girls, for those that don’t know, Paul Reubens is back as the loveable Pee-Wee Herman in an all new stage show at Club Nokia in Los Angeles. I had a chance to check it out and all I can say is wow.
When the curtain first opened up and I saw the set my mouth dropped. Cheers roared all around. I’ve only ever seen Pee-wee’s playhouse on TV and now it was physically right in front of me. If you’re a fan of Pee-Wee, this is something you have to experience for yourself. Enter Pee-Wee. Standing ovation.
Reubens is 57 now but is still energetic and enthusiastic as Pee-Wee as ever. His voice does sound kind of scruffy and lower now probably from doing the character’s voice so much. If you didn’t see him on Kimmel, watch this and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
The story itself is just like an episode of Pee-Wee’s playhouse. There is a word of the day (which is “fun” AHHHHH), a weird cartoon brought to you by the King of Cartoons himself, and a lot of familiar faces.
The characters that make a triumphant return are: Miss Yvonne (played by the same actress as the original), Cowboy Curtis (played by Phil LaMarr, sorry no Morpheus but hey its Phil LaMarr!), Jambi, King of Cartoons, and of course the puppets, Chairry, Magic Screen, Conky, Clocky, Globey, Randy and Pterry. Other actors in the show include Josh Meyers from MadTV and Lori Alan who plays Diane Simmons on Family Guy. Some stuff that was missing was the dinosaur family, the ant farm, no Penny cartoon and no Kap’n Karl (R.I.P. Phil Hartman).
Now we all know the story of what led to the fall of Pee-Wee Herman. Of course I’m talking about his happy hands at an X-rated theater, but hey we all have needs! Anyway, the show makes a lot of jokes about this. At one point, Pee-wee says that he’s glad he doesn’t have to worry about girls and hugging and all that icky stuff. Conky replies, “But Pee-Wee, don’t you wanna feel the touch of a girl and feel on her tit-tit-tit, tight sweater?” “No!” replies Pee-Wee, “I’ve got this” and raises his right hand waving it around in an explicit way. “My abstinence ring!” Some other notable stuff to mention that happens in the show is a relationship between Cowboy Curtis and Miss Yvonne finally develops, Pee-wee tries his best to talk Spanish, he does the tequila dance (which was awesome) and the boy that always wanted to fly finally gets his wish.
The show is entitled “The Pee-Wee Herman Show” and is playing at the new Club Nokia in Los Angeles running now until February 7th. The venue itself is small and intimate and to me perfect for this kind of show. Whether at floor level, or the balcony, anywhere you’re at is a good view. Oh yeah, did I mention they have a bar? And not only a bar, but waitresses walking around selling shots! What a country. I loved this show so much I wish I could’ve married it.
