Weekly Tech Wrap Up

wtwu

It’s that time again, time to review some of my cherry picked smaller stories of the week for those that might have missed them. This time round we’ve got an Adobe Flash update that doesn’t suck. OK, sucks a little less. Flash 10.1 beta was unleashed to the willing public with GPU video acceleration for certain Nvidia cards on Windows, but perhaps more importantly reduced CPU usage across all platforms. What does this mean? YouTube that doesn’t make your Mac or PC red-line that’s what. A step in the right direction Adobe, maybe Flash isn’t a lost cause after all. I’ve certainly seen some improvements on my netbook and Mac. (more…)

Jet Engine 1 – Bird 0

Mon, Feb 9, 2009

Ever wondered what happens when a bird hits a jet engine? Well wonder no more and feast your eyes on the super-slo-mo video of exactly what happens when a bird gets chewed through an engine. Similar to the beginning of Lost but less dramatic. Bird strikes as they’re known are a real problem but jet engines are designed with that in mind and can swallow quite a few of our feathery friends before succumbing and shutting down. Good job too because you wouldn’t want a stray Sea Gull to take you out as you hop across the pond now would you?

WARNING: Due to it’s graphic nature, this video is not for the easily offended, animal lover or the squeemish. If you don’t fit into one or other of these categories go ahead, but you have been warned.

Teenagers like this should NOT be using the internet

LiKe OmG. DISh iSh sOOoOOoOO kEwL. I LIk leaRneD hOw 2 uSe thE inTeRnEt aNd nOw i’M LiK sOoO PoPuLaR n StuFs.

I’m sorry. I don’t really type like that, but I did type that for a reason. To annoy you. I was annoying myself while I was writing that.  It took a good 2 to 3 minutes to type that first line. So how do pre-teens and teens do that? How do they read that?  And most importantly, why write/type like that?!

I grew up with the internet since the days of AOL 1.0 floppy disks. As a teenage geek during school lunch, all the “popular” kids went to the popular kids lunch areas.  I, on the other hand ran to the school computer lab as fast as a could to learn HTML, networking, and how to rocket jump in Team Fortress 1.   I always had some sort of annoyance towards those “popular” kids.  They all dressed alike, talked alike, and at some cases even had the same handwriting styles.

But now it feel as though they are stepping into my world.  Teenagers have learned to use the “internets” and are annoying me more and more. At first I thought MySpace was a good idea when it first came out.  Then they learned how to “code” their own HTML.  Since then, I haven’t visited MySpace until I created the “Why I hate MySpace” video.

I really feel as though I’m like an old grandpa sitting on a rocking chair yelling at kids to “get off my yard.”  Why can’t teens just use the internet for what it’s meant for.  Research, a creative outlet, a way to share stories, and read stories. If you’re going to use the internet just to “like say um stuff such as” why a forum member called you dumb. Just keep it to yourself and don’t feed the trolls.

Here is one more video that’s even worse than the first. Try watching it all the way through. I know I couldn’t.

Choose Your Own Adventure Books Meets YouTube

This creative choose your own adventure video on YouTube, by SpecBox, has combined indie short films with the power of YouTube annotations.  The plot of the short film is simple.  An online gamer is obviously obsessed with a certain online role playing game.  It is up to you to choose how you would like to see the destruction of his computer play out.  I do hope there are more films like this from SpecBox or other creative YouTubers to make videos more interactive.

YouTube on your Desktop

Tue, Dec 9, 2008

As if opening FireFox and typing in the Google search bar, “youtube a funny video”, was too hard for you, now all you have to do is pull up this new nifty program and do your searching from there.  In my opinion, it seems a bit much, especially for Windows users.  I mean, they have ENOUGH to deal with to have all these background programs running.

YouTube users protesting new widescreen viewer

Wed, Dec 3, 2008

/facepalm. Seriously people? Seriously? According to TrendsUpdates, dedicated YouTube users are protesting the new widescreen player. The new YouTube widescreen player was quietly introduced recently without any bugs.

First it was the big UI change of Facebook that people protested, now this.

*gets on soapbox*

PEOPLE OF THE INTERNET. Change happens for a reason. A lot of thought are put into web technologies. If you can’t handle these progressive changes please choose between not logging on or limit your internet viewing to MySpace.com. Both options assure no progressive UI changes will occur in your daily internet surfing.
