If there is one thing PC gaming has that console gaming lacks, it has to be User-Made Content. Sure, some console games are starting to incorporate tools to allow for the creation and distribution of such content, such as Halo‘s Forge Mode and the entire idea behind Little Big Planet. However, it may be a while, if ever, before console gaming gets User-Made Content on the same scale as what we find on PCs. But, some console gamers may ask: what’s so amazing about User-Made Content anyway? To answer that question, I direct your attention to GoldenEye: Source, a total conversion Half-Life 2 mod, which recreates the N64 GoldenEye 007 multiplayer feature. I’ll give you all a moment put your socks back on.
In development for over five years, GoldenEye: Source was released as a beta last February and has been steadily updated over the last year. It seems the game is finally complete with Team GoldenEye Source dropping the beta title following the 10 December update. Again, this is only a remake of the GoldenEye 007 multiplayer, containing 22 maps, 11 characters, 8 game modes and 80 achievements. No current news on whether the group will be releasing the single player campaign.
For those interested, the GoldenEye: Source mod is free to download, assuming, of course, you’ve purchased a Source Engine-powered game on Steam that comes with the Source SDK. If you don’t, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch is only $4.99.
