Mirror’s Edge 2 Banished to Development Hell

More bad news for gamers.  EA has announced that the development of Mirror’s Edge 2 has been halted indefinitely.

The news came from Sweden’s TV program called Press2Play, where a news segment announced that EA has asked the Swedish developers DICE to cease the development on the game.

“EA was shown a prototype, but declined,” said Press2Play, translated from Swedish by Eurogamer. “The project has been stopped — involved parties at DICE are working on something else now.”  In addition, “Mirror’s Edge didn’t match up to [EA’s] expectations regarding sales, and that has stopped the sequel that has been in development.”

This is a huge disappointment to many gamers, as Mirror’s Edge was an incredibly original game when it released in 2008.  In 2009, EA stated they would love to release a sequel to the game, but it seems that poor sales from the original and the prototype presented to the company was not up to the standards EA was looking for.

However, there still hasn’t been an official announcement from EA regarding the cancellation of the game.  Joystiq attempted to contact EA and received this response, “Mirror’s Edge is an important franchise built by the DICE studio in Stockholm. DICE is currently producing Battlefield 3. Nothing further to announce.”

With the focus of EA on developing a successful competitor to Call of Duty, it is understandable the company would ask the developers to focus on one of their main flagships in the competition with Activision.  However, it is unfortunate that another game has to be sacrificed to do so.

So, while it seems that Mirror’s Edge 2 hasn’t exactly been canceled, it is stuck in development hell for now.  Only time will tell if EA will revisit the series and expectant gamers will have to be a little more patient.
