Everybody knows the stereotypes about female gamers, even if most intelligent folk don’t take them seriously anymore.
All the same, LA Weekly blog author Kristina Benson has written up a rather fine deconstruction of some of the most enduring and pervasive sexist cliches about female gamers. It’s well worth a look, even if just to have ammunition on hand to counter the next time someone claims all gamers are shut-in man-children.
Some of the myths deconstructed:
- “Girl gamers” are a new phenomenon.
- Most girls don’t enjoy playing video games.
- “Girl gamers” are a tiny minority.
- Girls are less skilled players by nature.
- “Girl gamers” have conclusively different tastes than male gamers.
Surprise surprise, it’s all wrong. Check it out here. Thanks to fragdolls.com for the header photo.
