A rumor has been spreading that an “upgraded Wii” was going to be announced by Nintendo at E3 this summer, and Nintendo has finally confirmed the rumors.
During the E3 conference being held this June 7th through 9th, Nintendo will officially announce their new console that will be available by 2012. As of right now we are unsure if it will just be a beefed up Wii (as thought by the previous murmurs of HD capabilities) or a brand new console, but the news does come as a bit of a surprise given that both Sony and Microsoft have not made any hints that they would be doing the same in the near future.
This announcement also comes on the wings of Nintendo’s lack-luster sales and little to no original releases for the console in the upcoming months. It seems that change is in the air for the Japanese-based company, which rebounded tremendously thanks to their Wii and DS consoles. I think all gamers can agree that it will be interesting to see where Nintendo goes with their new console, in light of the Xbox Kinect providing controller-free movement games and PS3’s high graphics quality.
Nintendo also promises that the console will be “playable” by the time E3 rolls around. You can bet that all of us here at PG will keep our eyes out for the console while we dig around E3 this year.
