I know here at Comic Issues have we put a lot of focus on Marvel and DC Comics with some attention to Image and Dark Horse Comics. This is due dominantly to their longevity and marketing. We do however understand that these companies are a drop in the bucket compared to what is out there though. I am going to make it my personal mission to try and bring some of the gems from other companies to the readers here at Comic Issues.
Let us begin with an upcoming release from Zenescope Entertainment. In June 2011 they will present their series; FLY. FLY can be summed up in the following phrase, “What if there was a drug that gave you the power to fly? How far would you go to possess it?”
While the majority of all comic books follow a hero’s exploits as they fight for what is believed to be the greater good. Many heroes receive their powers through bizarre, often unlikely, circumstances that have forced them to endure many hardships. These hardships are often the foundation for their morals, used to fuel their determination, and mold them into the kind of hero they set out to be. What would heroes be like if that great power didn’t come at a cost? Would they remain the same? Would they even remain heroes? Ask yourself, what kind of person would you be if the ability to fly was just one hit away?
I am really excited for the release of this comic. I like it when there is a focus on human behavior in a storyline; in this case it looks as though the focuses will be on addiction, power, and control. The premise looks like a nice change of pace as well and there doesn’t appear to be any superheroes in this setting either which makes me want to read it that much more. I like the idea of a world much like our own that has something as powerful as a drug that allows people to fly introduced into it. My mind is tickled with anticipation and wonder just pondering how deep the rabbit hole of this story will go.
Zenescope Entertainment’s FLY is created by Raven Gregory (The Gift, The Wonderland Trilogy, and The Waking) and Arvid Nelson (co-creator of Rex Mundi), with colors done by Nei Ruffino (Supergirl, Green Lantern, and Escape from Wonderland). Together they will bring us a gritty look at the lengths some people might go to feed their addiction–of flight.
