The Blu-Day Review: The Lion King Diamond Edition

The King of all Disney animated films is on the prowl, but is its roar nothing more than a soft purr? It’s time for the Blu-Day Review.

Disney sets the Lion King free from the vault in a two disc DVD/Blu-ray combo, The Lion King Diamond Edition. With the re-release of The Lion King in theaters in 3D I wondered how the blu-ray would compare. Nothing beats the experience of seeing a film in theaters, but Disney manages to bring that same magic to your home.

Visuals

The Lion King has never looked so alive! Right from the opening scene of the sunrise, it will take your breath away. This is the best use of color I have seen: everything from the warm color tones of the savanna to the cool and chilling colors of the elephant graveyard stands out perfectly. The colors are remarkable, and the contrast between shades and textures bring it to life. This is the best this film has ever looked.

Sound

Crisp. Clear. Sounds wonderful. The classic songs from this film are a treat for the ears, and the sound effects put the plains of Africa into your living room, whether it is the tremble of the wildebeest stampede or the lion’s roar.

New Extras

“Pride of The Lion King” is a fantastic behind the scenes look into the Lion King and the Lion King Broadway production.

“The Lion King: A Memoir – Don Hahn” (Hahn is the producer of the film) is a short feature which also contains deleted scenes and deleted songs. Additionally, there are some fun outtakes and “bloopers” as well as a few trailers. The new extras are in HD.

Using Disney Second Screen, another Disney innovation, you can sync your computer or iPad to the film and view some of Disney’s extensive and impressive art work. Another feature is the interactive blu-ray gallery.

Previous Extras

These extras were in previous releases of the film. Disney includes sing-along subtitles. The animated song, “The Morning Report,” was part of the previous film release, but is included here as an extra in HD. Disney has about two hours of extra material available on HD live through its virtual vault, which includes interviews and features. These were available previously on disc.

Overall

In my opinion this is a must-own. Period. No second thoughts. If you are a fan of the Lion King, this is the best way to experience it. Currently, the film is on sale for $22.99.
