Since the announcement that Netflix was bringing the popular TV show Arrested Development back to life there has been a stirring of speculation and hope about the possible returns of other cancelled shows. Is this perhaps a chance to bring back geek favorite show Firefly?
Of course, geeks have been clamoring for this for ages. But, blogger Marc Bernadin argues, with the return of Arrested Development, a Firefly remake is more likely than ever.
Firefly certainly has a strong fan base, strong enough to convince Fox, who own the rights to the program, to let it be made into the feature film Serenity in 2005. Until the Netflix announcement, bringing back cancelled shows was a difficult thing to do for a number of reasons including ownership, set and production costs, and cast availability. But now the doors, Bernadin argues, are open.
Firefly has a couple of things going for it that other shows may not. The fan base is still quite active and eager to see more of their beloved space cowboy/smuggler/heroes. Both creator Joss Whedon and lead Nathan Fillion have expressed interest in continuing the shodw. Whether or not it’ll make a difference in getting Firefly back onto TV is anyone’s guess, but, as Bernadin argues, the question is more “why not?” than “why?”
