We probably asked for this. A savvy user — miladesn — on the NeoGAF forums today noticed that Square Enix filed for a new trademark name yesterday under the name “Deus Ex: Human Defiance”. The trademark appears to hint that a new Deus Ex game might be coming along very soon, seemingly in direct relation to their critically acclaimed game Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Some of the forum users speculate that this might be a new port of Human Revolution to the WiiU. However, it seems unlikely that Square Enix would go so far as to change the name for a mere console port.
Human Revolution was released in the fall of 2011 to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. It was later ported to Mac OS X. The game featured protagonist Adam Jensen and his role in the ethical and political conflict with human augmentation — using cybernetic implants to enhance certain talents — in a futuristic dystopia. It was a prequel to the long-running Deus Ex series.
It sounds like, if this new trademark proves to be a new game, it might be a direct sequel to Human Revolution. Only time will tell, but it does pique my interest to see where Square Enix might be taking this.
