Hearthstone, the new Digital Collectible Card Game announced by Blizzard at PAXEast 2013, isn’t what one expects when one hears that the PC juggernaut is bringing a new title to its rabid fans, but it’s already clear that the title will have the same brilliant polish and and stunning art work that we’ve come to expect.

The universe is certainly well-suited to the CCG genre, and there’s a lot of audience overlap between the Blizzard faithful, and fans of Magic: The Gathering, the Star Wars CCG, and other similar titles. This is an unexpected move, but not at all a poor choice and it’s certainly nice to see one of the largest studios in the field paying homage to an earlier time in gaming. There also seems to be some solid decision-making in marketing the title, as it is based on a Free-to-Play mechanic with add-on decks coming in at a $.99 price point. Presence on iOS as well as PC will certainly broaden its appeal.
