Diablo III garnered a mixed response upon its release, being plagued by network errors and a critical reception of its always-online requirement. For all that, it was a runaway success for Activision Blizzard with a record 3.5 million units sold in the first 24 hours, and a robust 12 million units over its first year.
The Diablo franchise boasts some of the best received expansions in gaming, from the redoubtable Hellfire to the brilliant Lord of Destruction. It was only a matter of time before Diablo III‘s happy ending was twisted into something darker and more true-to-form.
Today at Gamescom, Blizzard unveiled a characteristically gorgeous cinematic for Diablo III: Reaper of Souls — a full expansion — that features Maltheal, the Angel of Death.
Diablo III: Reaper of Souls boasts a full expansion campaign, a reforged Paragon mode for a deeper endgame experience, and, most importantly, a brand-new character class: the Crusader.
Diablo III: Reaper of Souls will be released in 2014.
