This past weekend saw two Super Bowl disappointments, one the slaughter-fest that was the game, and two the Transformer 4 trailer. At this point is seems that Age of Extinction is a better description of the franchise than just this movie. With the inclusion of “Marky” Mark Wahlberg, director / producer Michael Bay seems to be trying to take another bite of the energon by enticing fan with the ‘bots they’ve been asking for since the beginning, Grimlock and the Dinobots. But just like the rest of the Transformers, is that what fans are getting? Or are they more pale comparisons to their source material?
From the looks of things we’re getting Predaking (or maybe a Megatron alt? or Doublecross?) and Grimlock along with some new bots to fill the ranks of those lost in the previous movies, and so more toys can be sold.
Clearly speaking not as a fan this trailer hasn’t done anything to change my mind as to if I’ll see this movie. Nothing that felt wrong in the previous movies seems to be rectified in this one. Instead complicated special effects with voices jump around the screen with little distinction as to who is who. The liberties that Bay and his team have taken with the franchise are alienating for those who would have been most excited for a Transformers movie, maybe he should give up now and start salvaging TMNT before it’s too late for the Green Machine.
