Any fan of The Flash has probably been pondering: who is the Reverse Flash? I hope to drop some knowledge and some theories, so stay tuned for some spoiler fun with The Flash.
Let’s start with the beginning, we know Barry Allen’s mother was killed by what appeared to be another Speedster, though he wears yellow. For any fan of The Flash comics, we know that it’s the Reverse Flash. According to the comics, he’s Flash’s arch nemesis and is hellbent on ruining Barry’s life. Now the mystery is: who is the Reverse Flash?
Now I can’t guarantee that this article won’t have spoilers, but I’ll make sure I note a warning when about to reveal something. So what do we know about the Reverse Flash? In the comics, his name was Eobard Thawne, he has the powers of the Flash, and he’s also from the future. So who are our suspects?
For the time being there are two, so let’s focus on the obvious one, or better yet, the one that is put out in front: Doctor Harrison Wells. From the very first episode it seemed Wells was our prime suspect. In the series he’s seen in a wheelchair and looks very interested in Barry. It’s revealed pretty early that Wells is certainly hiding something, as he can walk and has a secret lair with a computer that has knowledge of the future.
As the story progresses and the Reverse Flash returns, Detective Joe West reopens Barry’s mother’s murder case and starts to suspect Wells of having something to do with it.
What’s great is the exchange that Detective West has with Wells. “Where were you on the night of Barry’s mother’s murder?” While Wells doesn’t answer the question, his silence makes you believe he was there. But how is that possible? We’ll answer that question a bit later. Wells then returns to his secret lair where the Reverse Flash suit is hanging up. Bingo! We got our man, or do we?
Suspect number 2 is Eddie Thawne, which is an interesting character as you would never see it coming unless you read the comic. Remember that Reverse Flash’s name was Eobard Thawne, and it just so happens Detective Joe West’s partner Edward Thawne has a very similar name. Plus he’s dating Iris, which is kinda like Lex Luthor dating Lois Lane. However, that’s the only evidence we have.
So let’s return to the question of was Wells there the night of the murder. Let’s guess yes. Okay spoiler alert time.
In the latest episode two things occurred: first it was revealed that there were two speedsters the night of Barry’s mother’s murder. We know the Reverse Flash was there, but what if the Flash was there as well, trying to stop the Reverse Flash from killing his mother?
And the second thing that happened: while Wells was in his secret lair he had a ring on his finger, better yet a Flash Ring. What does that mean? What about the blood that was tested; it was supposed to belong to an older Barry Allen. So let’s put this all together.
My theory is that Wells is actually Barry in the future, which explains a lot. He’s always interested in making sure Barry is getting faster. Which would mean anything Barry learns, Wells would get the same ability.
This leaves us with the Reverse Flash being Edward Thawne, who is currently dating Iris, and is also close with Detective Joe West and friends with Barry. Sounds like a very devastating blow to our Red Speedster.
So who do you think the Reverse Flash is? Any more theories?
