The Legend of Zelda is coming to Netflix

In a recent article posted to the Wall Street Journal’s Speakeasy blog, a source “familiar” with the project reports that Netflix is working closely with Nintendo to develop a television series based on The Legend of Zelda. Although there are no writers attached to the supposed project, this rumor alone has garnered a lot of attention.

According to the Wall Steet Journal’s article, their source claims that Netflix is describing the show as “Game of Thrones for a family audience.” Ben Fritz, the author of the blog post, goes on to say that,

Nintendo is very protective of its intellectual property and has allowed few adaptations over the years. An animated “Legend of Zelda” series ran for just one season in 1989. A 1993 movie based on Nintendo’s “Super Mario Bros.” was an infamous bomb.

Although I personally don’t think this rumor is anything more than a rumor, I am open to a Zelda show, especially one coming from Netflix. However, I really don’t want to get my hopes up. Historically, as Ben Fritz pointed out, Nintendo has not had great luck whenever it came to a scripted show or movie based on their first-party titles.

So what do you all think? Would you like to binge-watch a Zelda show on Netflix? Should we even pay attention to rumors like this? Let us know in comments!
