DC Rebirth continues to shine in some of my top picks for the week, with the Teen Titans making a grand appearance, someone getting sent to the Phantom zone, and Sinestro Corp being, well, Sinister. Oh, and did you know Batgirl is a MMA fighter?
Top Pick: Titans #2
Been waiting for this book for quite some time: after the revelations of Titans #1 I was eager to see where the story went. Well prepare yourself for a battle royal: Titans vs Teen Titans.
Before the battle actually begins we follow Linda Park (Wally’s former girlfriend via another timeline) attempting to talk to Kid Flash (Teen Titans) and asking him how he knew her – Kid Flash apparently has no memories. Who are these mysterious Teen Titans who’re “pulling the strings?”
Top Pick: Hal Jordan + GL Corps
I’m so thankful that this book exists; I’ve been trying to get through the main Green Lantern book, the one with Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz that takes place on Earth… Yeah rule number one for Green Lantern fun: SPACE Cops generally work better in SPPAAACCCE!!! Sadly, I really have been enjoying those two characters, but even with Atrocitous and the Red Lanterns’ attack the book felt stale.
Hal Jordan + The Green Lantern Corps however felt quite refreshing. Though you have to ask yourself: it must be lost in translation but why hasn’t the universe put the words “Sinister” and “Sinestro” together yet? Well that’s the premise of this book: after the Sinestro Corp brought law and order back to the galaxy, they have now begun harvesting victims for their Fear Machine. Only problem is Hal Jordan’s there to kick some @$$. Can Hal survive an onslaught of 12 Sinestro Corp members vs 1?
Surprise Pick: Batgirl #2
Gail Simone’s run on Batgirl is still on my must-read list, so there was more than a little interest in this
title. I enjoyed how lighthearted the book is. It was a nice change up from the darkness that fills most Bat Books.
Turns out Batgirl is in China hanging out with her old friend Kai, who she sort of has feelings for. Kai is in some sort of trouble, and a would-be attacker with a Chinese tattoo jumps Kai in Japan. It’s up to Batgirl to solve the mystery. After breaking up a peeping tom web ring she sets her eye on the Octagon, and she trains with one of China’s best female MMA stars. The only problem is that her first fight features a woman that has the same tattoo as the woman who attacked Kai.
Action Comics #962
Apparently I missed an issue of Action Comics – when I last checked in Doomsday was on a rampage and it was up to Superman from the old DC Universe to defeat him. Oh, and did I mention that Lex Luthor is there wearing a Superman-ish armor and actually helping?
Worried for the safety of Louis and their child John, Superman asks Wonder Woman to take them to safety and watch over them. Best place to do that: yeah, the WatchTower. While Wonder Woman wants to help, she certainly wants to get into battle too, and Louis wants the same thing. Team up time – Sup and WW vs Doomsday. Granted, Superman has a plan for his old pal Doomsday, and what better place to send him to: The Phantom Zone! Which is where that weird guy in Green who’s shown up in previous Rebirth books laughs, because he finally has Doomsday.
Flash #5
So yeah, I’m a tad behind on the Flash books: previously the Speed Force gave a grip ton of people super speed. Some users have special abilities, including Barry’s new girlfriend Meena, aka: Fast Track. Star Labs has become a training facility for the Flash Corps (not their official name) and Barry is taking a much deserved day off.
New 52 Wally West shows up at Star Labs, and Fast Track convinces him to train with her. She shows him new abilities and even how to run up a building. Barry continues his day off, and decides to have lunch with Iris. As he starts talking about Meena and their not-so-sort-of-relationship, Barry gets an emergency call from Star Labs. Godspeed shows up and destroys everyone including Meena.
