REVIEW: BLACK PANTHER (Spoiler-free)

Does not contain spoilers but does contain cursing. Lots of cursing.

I was lucky enough to see Black Panther this week before everyone else. I was so excited, and you should be excited to see this movie too.

From the first five minutes I was sucked into this brilliant and beautiful movie. I was mesmerized by the characters, their costumes, the visual effects, and Wakanda. There are a lot of characters in the film, but the actors and writing portrays them so that you have this intimate connection of love or hate with every character.

Black Panther/T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) has a very deep sense of duty and is strong, but you also see a gentle compassionate side. Boseman plays the part so flawlessly. His mother, Romanda, is played by Angela Bassett. I should hope everyone one knows what a fucking badass lady she is. If you don’t, shame on you! Figure it out. Ramonda (Bassett) is a strong woman who stood by the King, her husband, and T’Challa as he assumes the throne. You soon realize Ramonda is their backbone. T’Challa’s sister, Shuri (Letitia Wright), is a quirky, sassy, younger sister who is smart as hell. She is the mad scientist behind all the cool shit in the movie. I love her and want to be her when I grow up.

Speaking of strong women, let’s talk about the General, Okoye (Danai Gurira). Women rule this movie. Actually, it wasn’t something that was rah, rah, powerful women. Equality is something that isn’t even an issue in Wakanda. (Another reason #wakandaforever should be trending.) Okoye is a fierce warrior. She is the General of the damn army. Not even her husband is a match for her. Not giving any more details on why I said that. Her whole army is women. They protect the King and they are fucking amazing. The fight scenes are epic. I mean look at her. I am not messing with her.

Another strong woman is Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o. She is just as fierce as the rest of the women. She stands up for what is right for Wakanda and T’Challa. If T’Challa has one weakness it is her. She is feisty and refuses to be tied down by a man. But girl, it is Black Panther. Sometimes we have to make exceptions. Especially when they are feminists too.

Now, let’s talk about the bad guy. There is always a bad dude. Let me tell you, Michael B. Jordan plays Erik Killmonger and he goes straight past bad guy  into ‘I am so fucked up I don’t give a shit what happens’. He has a grudge and Wakanda, T’Challa/Black Panther, and anyone that is standing in his way is going to be in for a fucking rough time. This character is intense. I love me some Michael B. Jordan but several times I just got lost in the character and was thinking, ‘Damn, I hate that guy’. Legit bad guy.

And a nerd girl post from me wouldn’t be complete without me talking about Martin fucking Freeman. He plays CIA Agent, Everett K. Ross. He is cocky. Frankly, does Freeman ever play a character that isn’t cocky? Even with all that cockiness he ends up being a Wakanda ally in an awesome way. I love him even more now. Yep, that’s all you are getting on that too and I promise not to write the word cock, cocky or any variation again. PS. I am lying.

Wakanda is wonderful so skip that Fifty Shades shit and run on out and see this movie. I think I have finished cursing today. Maybe.
