Jessica Chastain’s previous role in 2016’s Miss Sloane no doubt assisted her ability to nail this performance. In short, if a fast-talking, dialogue-heavy, crime biography drama is what you seek, this one comes media recommended and entertaining on that level.
The casting works very well and includes Kevin Costner and Idris Elba. The pacing is pretty consistent for a 2 hr 20 minute duration. On a storyline level, I’m sure it’s on par with the book and is as factual as it chooses to be.
This kind of story skimming creates a ripple in the overall entertainment value, in that it creates a glazed-over dump of random facts and statistics designed to baffle rather than enlighten the viewer. This movie will not improve your hustle in terms of educational value (i.e. poker, gambling, high stakes).
Nonetheless the film works as an account of the real life figure, Molly Bloom, and is moderately entertaining, staying on the rails despite a few weak scenes and lack of action. 6/10
