As someone who knew next to nothing about Winston Churchill, I went into Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour in hope of a good history lesson, in addition to a well crafted film. Thankfully, I got my fair share of both.
Anchored by the award-sweeping transformation of Gary Oldman, this telling of the inner conflicts within Britain’s actions in early WWII balanced enough expositional storytelling with character drama to keep me up to date and entertained throughout. The score and production design also assist in making this a well-rounded and informative biopic overall. Think Lincoln: British Lincoln.
I would suggest, however, that it may play a little too pompous in its clear Oscar ambitions and it may turn off anyone who may be weary of award season’s predictable slew of biopics. If the subject matter doesn’t grab you, best stay clear of this one. However if, like me, you’re interested, there’s much to enjoy here whether you’re British or not, as Oldman’s assured performance is worth your time alone. Thoughts?
