Every year fighting game fans and competitors from around the globe shift their gaze towards Las Vegas, Nevada for the Evolution Fighting Championship. Players and spectators alike gather at the Mandalay Bay in hopes of witnessing or becoming gods of the fighting game community (FGC). This year, I had the honor of attending EVO as a spectator once again, but I also had a chance to peek behind the curtain and see how events like this are organized. Albeit on a much smaller scale. On day 2 of EVO 2018 I helped a friend of mine run the official EVO after party event, Bar Fights. Although my role was minimal, I worked security, I had a chance to put my often considered “useless” knowledge of fighting game competitors to use by ushering said competitors through the VIP line. For the first time I had a chance to meet many prominent competitors from the FGC and even be in the same room as a few of them at the after-after party.
