Destiny 2: Forsaken features three week cycle of new content, evolving world

The latest Destiny 2 expansion, Forsaken, breaks the monotony of the past by shaking things up on a weekly basis. Get the details after the jump.

In the gap between content releases, games like Destiny 2 often feel empty, as players wait for their actions to affect the world. With the new Forsaken expansion, Bungie has found a way to combat that gap syndrome by creating a new zone that changes week-to-week, providing new content at a frequent pace. The Dreaming City is proving to be a fascinating experiment in ever-changing content that breaks the rut Destiny has been stuck in for too long.

Following the completion of the Forsaken story campaign, players are thrust into a new series of quests involving the breathtaking homeland of the Reef Awoken. There’s trouble in paradise, however, with the Taken infesting the land. DLC of the past would see players spend the next 3 months in a static situation, with virtually no post-release content or experiences to fill the time. Forsaken throws the old ways aside, as The Dreaming City changes every week, with the spread of Taken infection and our efforts to combat it taking center stage in a multi-week story. Along the way, Forsaken introduces new quests, challenges, and the most detailed small-scale experience seen to date.

Week three unlocks the first-ever dungeon in Destiny called “The Shattered Throne.” The dungeon provides the first mini-raid experience for up to three players to tackle. Far longer and more difficult than the game’s previous fireteam-level content, the game suggests a gear level even higher than the raid to tackle this encounter. At the end of week three, the Taken won’t allow your victories to stand, and find a way to reset time back the start of the process in week one.

With the three week cycle continuing for the foreseeable future, The Dreaming City and its associated content looks to be quite a departure from the past. While only time will tell if Bungie delivers on more frequent, evolving content, Forsaken has already done wonders for keeping the time between DLC releases fresh and exciting.
