Review – Bohemian Rhapsody

In our continuing series to stay on top of the possible Oscar nominations, today guest columnist k.e.n.n.y.h. looks at Bohemian Rhapsody.

..Alright!

…Full disclosure I am sitting here with headphones on with Best of Queen at 100% volume so sorry if I go off on a tangent at times…

Bohemian Rhapsody is the biopic tale of the rise of Queen and their lead singer Freddie Mercury (just for info the youngins there – one of the greatest bands of the 70s, 80s and early 90s).

This is more than a bashing out of great music (and there are some great songs in there) but the story is immersive as well. Do they fly by parts of their tale? Yes. In fairness they had to, otherwise this would be four hours (I know I know, some of us would love that).

But they cover the big breaks and breakups, the sense of the family of the band, the fights, the brainstorming of some of the biggest ideas in modern music, and heartache of loss and betrayal.

So as a movie to watch – how is it? Simply awesome.

The cast is perfect. Cannot fault anyone. The pace of the story is good with the perfect ending – a mini concert of the band playing at Wembley for the Live Aid concert in 1985. In fact the reproduction was so amazing it should get awards just for that sequence alone.

Honestly I could go on for ages here. Malek, Lee, Hardy and Mazzello were incarnations of Mercury, May, Rogers and Deacon. The heart they and the story showcased will not allow dry eyes to leave the cinema (be warned now). The supporting cast throughout only gave further humour, drama and even greater depth of heart for the story.

There are easter eggs for the fans, a few character cameos. And cats, lots of cats.

My only complaint – my favourite songs weren’t there. How dare they.

Watch this at the biggest, loudest cinema you can get to. You will not be disappointed.

We are the champions – who will rock you – anyway the wind blows….

Take care ????
