Review – Roma

Continuing our quest to catch up with the possible Oscar nominations, guest writer Jerome looks at Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma.

A story that chronicles a year in the life of a middle-class family’s maid in Mexico City in the early 1970s.

I can easily understand why this may not be for some people, however Alfonso Cuarón’s film is one of my absolute favorites of the year!

The movie doesn’t really have an actual plot, it’s something like The Florida Project, Eighth Grade and a few others. The story unfolds as it goes on, and I won’t say much because the movie is one of those movies that’s very easy to spoil.

But I will say that the movie is absolutely beautiful: the cinematography is excellent, the use of black and white is brilliant, the characters are really likable and feel very real. I found myself caring about the characters mostly because of how well written they are, the movie does an amazing job of building up to certain events, which is something a lot of movies fail to do.

The movie also does an incredible job of making the setting look like Mexico in 1970. It’s beautifully done, the characters go through tons of hardships love, anger, tragedy, bliss and a lot more. It’s one of those movies that will hit you really hard yet it’s still fascinating at the same time.

Overall the movie is a masterpiece and is certainly one of the best films of the year. The movie is on Netflix and I seriously recommend it!
