Review – The Favourite

Guest writer Donzell returns this week to weigh in on The Favourite.

The Favourite is a period drama directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and stars Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz. This movie follows Abigail’s (Stone) attempt to restore her lost nobility by seeking work from her cousin Lady Sarah (Weisz) upon arriving in Queen Anne’s (Colman) court. Each cast member delivered great performances and carried this film, which is filled with politics and drama. I had a good time at this film.

Colman, Stone and Weisz all deliver amazing performances, with my personal favorite going to Stone. She has to show the vulnerabilities of Abigail’s low nature and shift as the character struggles to survive the Queen’s court. Colman wonderfully portrays Queen Anne and shows her depressed and seemingly incompetent state very well.

The film was totally well made though. Scenes look wonderful, the pacing is good, and each performance was strong.

A common factor I seek in movies is character and the theme. The major characters in this movie each have amazing arcs. Each of them felt like people and not just characters. The theme of using friendship and trust to take and keep power is evident throughout the movie. I was worried this movie could be “Mean Girls 18th Century” but it’s more layered than that. I appreciate the story that was told.

Overall, I enjoyed The Favourite and believe it is a good film worthy of its praise. Each of the leads did an amazing job and all three will probably receive awards buzz. The film is well directed and supports an interesting plot and theme. I recommend The Favourite for all audiences.
