It can’t have been a coincidence that the issue with the sexiest number is also a story about a town full of people losing their inhibitions all over the place. Read on for a review of Wonder Woman #69.
The story is very fun; I’m always up for some magical interference that causes everybody to get over-the-top lovey dovey and do things they’ll probably regret later. I also like that Wonder Woman’s first response to someone telling her that they’ve all decided life’s too short to ignore their deepest desire is basically “Cool, you do your thing, man.” Something is clearly off but that non-judgemental smile of hers was really fun.
Aphrodite gets a moment to shine (…literally…) later in the issue, and it’s also fun to watch “normal” people react to a deity. And I liked watching a pterippi throwing shade at someone over their life choices too.
There’s a pretty dramatic image in the last few pages of the issue, I won’t spoil it but it involves a face, and it had to be a tough drawing to pull off and have it look like what they were going for, but they nailed it, and it was very impressive. (Sorry to be so vague, but part of the fun was turning the page and seeing the image for the first time.)
Speaking of the art, I’m enjoying Xermanico’s lines with Romulo Fajardo Jr.’s color. The watercolor-like tone to the gradients is lovely, and the lines are detailed and realistic without being too realistic, they’re doing a great job with the faces and the poses. And they went for an Alphonse Mucha look to Aphrodite’s dramatic scene, which was the perfect choice.
