This week’s guest review is from WMK Movie Reviews.
After the insanely epic final trailer that dropped prior to Avengers Endgame, there was nothing but pure excitement for an all-out monster brawl/memorable action flick. Godzilla: King of the Monsters fixes a major issue Godzilla fans had with the 2014 adaption, but it loses a lot of its wit in the process.
As a Godzilla film alone, it will likely please the die-hards, but keep in mind the average film from the original canon hovered at about an hour and thirty minutes. KOTM runs at over two hours and, in between the stellar fight sequences, the dialogue and characters are nearly unbearable.
As many Godzilla fans, myself included, have stated, we’re not all looking for a sophisticated, complex storyline in a film like this. However, moving along a bloated runtime with its cringy script and one dimensional characters is a tough task.
The biggest saving grace to this sequel, and soon-to-be predecessor to Godzilla Vs Kong, is the thought put into the action sequences. Though the booming score and flashing lights would give epileptics nightmares, there is no shortage of giant monster showdowns. This largely makes up for the constant absence of the title character in the ‘14 film, even if it gave audiences more of a connection to the core characters.
Regardless, Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be loved by younger audiences seeking a badass CG action fest, but it still suffers from finding a balance between visuals and strong writing. 2.5/5
