Review – Rocketman

This week’s guest review is from autisticcritic.

In the same vein as Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman is a music biopic based on the life of the flamboyant Elton John.

Directed by Dexter Fletcher, who was originally supposed to direct Bohemian Rhapsody as well, Rocketman is a fun and exciting take on the biopic genre. This movie is half biopic and half musical, including scenes which seem straight out of a fantasy, but which perfectly encapsulate the personality of Elton John.

Taron Egerton is sensational as Elton John. He proves what a skilled and talented actor he is since Elton is so different from the characters he has portrayed before, such as Eggsy from Kingsman and Eddie Edwards in Eddie the Eagle. Not only is he such a talented actor but he is also an amazing singer.

Egerton is joined by a fantastic supporting cast including Jamie Bell, Richard Madden and Bryce Dallas Howard. All are exceptionally good with their characters and also give pretty good vocal performances when they sing.

The movie shows years of Elton John’s life and the make-up does a very good job of aging up the characters so you can see how much time has passed. The only issue with this is the story seems to gloss over parts of Elton’s life, most notably his marriage which is over after only a few minutes of movie time.

I enjoyed Rocketman immensely. I could hardly stop smiling as I was watching it and when it was over I went home and bought the soundtrack. Taron Egerton is doing incredibly well with his career so far and I can’t wait to see what he does next.
