Binary System Podcast – Watch Party #23 – The Hunt for Red October

It’s time yet again to Social Distance the heck out of this epidemic and watch a movie together while still staying in three different states: North Carolina, Florida, and California. Next up this week, in honor of Sean Connery, The Hunt For Red October.

The Netflix Watch Party app ended up being a little complicated, so we just set a time to hit “play” and then chatted through instant messenger. Click the jump to read some highlights from the conversation.

The Players: Elizabeth, Hannah, Kathryn, Nathan, and the parents (Parents represented here by Marian, because Dad would chisel a message in a stone tablet before typing anything on a phone.)

Elizabeth
Is this a good chat room for the Watch Party? I’ve lost track…

Kathryn
Works for me? Everyone ready?

Hannah
This has mom?

Marian
Sure. I need to turn off the ring. The last time I tried that my phone wound up in my freezer for a day

Elizabeth
hahaha

Hannah
Hold please, DVD firing up its steam

Ok ready

Elizabeth
I love how Amazon Prime’s named it “Part of the Jack Ryan series” when most people didn’t care before the TV series came out.

Kathryn
Almost ready…

Elizabeth
(And only slightly more people care now.)

Kathryn
What was the installment that had Chris Pine?

Elizabeth
Can’t remember, it wasn’t very interesting. (Though Pine was certainly pretty.)

Kathryn
Ready to play now!

Elizabeth
Ready here too!

Hannah
Playing

Elizabeth
Playing!

Kathryn
Playing

Elizabeth
Probably been 15 years or more since I saw this

Nathan
There’s drug use in this movie?

Kathryn
Same

Hannah
Such an Event Horizon opening

Kathryn
I WAS JUST THINKING THAT

Hannah
Same SFX I bet

Elizabeth
Sam Neill has it built into his contract

Hannah
Heh

OH HE’S SO HANDSOME

Elizabeth
Hee

Kathryn
And young, damn

Hannah
the sheer size of those boats

Elizabeth
I think Sean Connery stayed the same age for 40 years.

Nathan
He would have been 60 when this was released.

Elizabeth
Holy crap

Hannah
I FORGOT TIM CURRY WAS IN THIS

Nathan
Me too!

Elizabeth
SAME

Hannah
Jeffrey Jones too tbh

Kathryn
I only remembered because of the meme about how you’re defined by what movie you associate Tim Curry with

Nathan
Fred Thompson before he was a Senator, I believe.

Hannah
Vilnius is in Lithuania, and this movie is why I know that

DR …

Crusher

Nathan
YOUNG Alec Baldwin.

Elizabeth
DOCTOR CRUSHER!!!!

Kathryn
YAY

Elizabeth
100 percent forgot she was in this

Nathan
Don’t blink or you’ll miss her!

Elizabeth
Hee

Kathryn
That may be her only scene, I think this is kind of a guy flick.

Hannah
Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise and Alec Baldwin are like our generation’s Hollywood Access of Evil

Elizabeth
Not a fan of him mansplaining turbulence to the flight attendant, but to be fair she was telling a passenger to sleep, so it evens out.

Hannah
Heh, good point

Elizabeth
Also yes on the Gibson, cruise, Baldwin

YAY MUFASA!

Nathan
DARTH VADER!

Elizabeth
What a delicious voice

Kathryn
Didn’t he play the same character for the Harrison Ford installments

Elizabeth
Uh, yes?

Nathan
Yep!

Until they killed him off.

Hannah
1990 is the last time a baby girl was ever named Sally

Elizabeth
Agreed

Hannah
(Until Night Before Christmas probably)

Elizabeth
I know a Sally but she’s 60 if she’s a day.

Hannah
This movie is the lovechild of Indiana Jones and Silence of the Lambs, discuss

Nathan

Elizabeth
Well now I’m going to be on the lookout for THAT connection

Kathryn
I kinda wanna watch Event Horizon now

Hannah
SAME

Elizabeth
Same

Hannah
That sound effect, man, I wonder when that became standard for info-scrawl
Courtney Vance is so good in this

Elizabeth
I always remember Pavarotti/Paginini because of this
CRAWFORD

Kathryn
There we go

Hannah
YA SEE?

Elizabeth
Hahaha

Nathan
Anyone read the book this was based on?

Kathryn
Nope

Elizabeth
Nope

Hannah
OOF MY OVARIES

Elizabeth
hahaha

Nathan
I did, right after the movie was released.

Hannah
… sorry

Nathan
It was good!

Elizabeth
Babyface Sam Neill

Nathan
This is a pretty faithful adaptation.

Hannah
IN UNIFORM

Kathryn
I think Connery looks so much more handsome here than he did as Bond.

Elizabeth
Agreed

Kathryn
(Sorry Mom)

Elizabeth
This came out one year after Last Crusade, I could’ve sworn Crusade was after

Hannah
Heh

Nathan
Great transition here!

Elizabeth
Best Russian-to-English transition ever

Hannah
Trial at Nuremberg is the other movie that does that

Elizabeth
did not know that

Hannah
Took a relistening of Best Pick to find that nugget

Kathryn
I love when directors and cinematographers work with the audience to agree on a polite fiction.
“Don’t worry, they’re still speaking Russian here, move along “

Elizabeth
I was in a theater once where as soon as it became apparent that the whole movie was subtitled, half the audience left.
Getting rid of the subtitles I’m sure was a priority.

Hannah
Well, we don’t need a movie full of Sean Connery trying to speak Russian…

Nathan
With a Scottish accent.

Elizabeth
hahah, agreed

Hannah
No music there

Nathan
James Bond couldn’t have killed that guy more efficiently if he tried.

Elizabeth
SO fast

Kathryn
I remember that sub we toured at the San Diego marina.

Hannah
Isn’t there a scene in Last Crusade where they’re walking along a big Nazi construction like this?

Elizabeth
One in Indiana Jones I think
A ship?

Hannah
Something

Elizabeth
Oh, whatsisbucket from Beetlejuice

Hannah
Jeffery Jones at 1/3 his current size

Elizabeth
Ayup

Nathan
Chekov’s rescue sub!

Elizabeth
Hee

Hannah
Heh

Elizabeth
THERE’s Frankefurter

Hannah
Killed by precipi

Nathan

Hannah
Tation

Elizabeth
hahah

Hannah
I really wonder what Tim Curry’s agent’s long game was

Kathryn
Be in all the things?

Elizabeth
Not sure, though he’s in the right regarding those keys

Kathryn
Hey Elizabeth, that’s Stick from Daredevil.

Elizabeth
OH, that’s where I recognized him from!

Kathryn
Nathan had to remind me he was in that.

Elizabeth
I mean other than Crawford

Kathryn
He was also very good in The Right Stuff.

Nathan
I forgot he was in that.

Hannah
I love all these eastern European extras under a couple of Gaelic lads

Elizabeth
Hee
Is Neill going for British or quiet Russian there?

Hannah
Haha WE KNOW HE CAN’T DO ACCENTS LEAVE HIM ALONE

Elizabeth
hahha

Hannah
Every time with the Russian anthem at the Olympics, right back here

Elizabeth
That is a long ass anthem.

Hannah
Shit’s got VERSES
(I mean, ours does too but totes racist, so)

Elizabeth
Heh
Bit of a jump scare at that telephone..
Who’s giving the briefing?” “You are.”
Nightmare material right there.

Nathan
No pressure!

Hannah
This has serious Sorkin vibes
At least four years prior to A Few Good Men?
(On Broadway)

Kathryn
Did they say how his wife died?

Nathan
Not yet.

Elizabeth
OH, I forgot Broadway was so much earlier, I was about to say “no, after?”

Kathryn
Shouting something that gets you glared at by a whole room, more nightmare material.
Impressed that he’s not even a little embarrassed.

Elizabeth
I like that giggle Jones has in his voice there

Hannah
Hee yes

Elizabeth
Who’s the actor talking to Ryan here? Very familiar..

Nathan
He played Francis in Logan’s Run.

Elizabeth
I feel like I know him somewhere else, but with a cornpone southern accent

Nathan
Ever see Gettysburg?

Elizabeth
Nope

Hannah
Second act is a go

Elizabeth
Ayup

Nathan
He was also Duncan Idaho in Dune.

Elizabeth
Was JUST typing that, I don’t recognize any of his stuff, so no idea why I kept putting him in House of Cards.

Hannah
Skaarsgard just playing same character as in Good Will Hunting

Elizabeth
Heh, yes

Hannah
His crows feet are my happy place

Elizabeth
heh

Kathryn
Is smoking really a good idea in a sub?

Hannah
I don’t doubt that the Russians did it anyway
Accent coming to you from Moscow by way of Christchurch

Elizabeth
The dude with the candybar needs to get punched in the mouth, just a little.

Kathryn
A discussion of puke is bad at the best of times, BUT SHOUTING IT IN YOUR FACE IS WORSE.

Elizabeth
AND EATING WHILE DOING SO
Jonesy is so familiar but I think it’s just because he’s done a ton of Law & Order.
(I never saw Picket Fences)

Hannah
Him and Don Cheadle and Mahershala Ali and no other straight men in Hollywood for at least six months

Elizabeth
Right?

Hannah
I feel like this is so basic for exposition but it’s so effective

Elizabeth
Very
“You might consider” is a nice phrase if delivered well

Hannah
As if Kelsey Grammer needed an asshole doppelganger

Elizabeth
Heh

Hannah
Also I’m sure they don’t actually get THAT close to rocks

Elizabeth
No but I still wouldn’t want to be that navigator

Kathryn
The delay between the direction from the navigator and them ACTUALLY TURNING makes me twitch.

Hannah
What I love to think about is how there are so many modern tools but soldiers/sailors everywhere are still trained in the essentials

Elizabeth
Good thing too

Hannah
I WILL DREAM OF THAT TIGHT-LIPPED SMILE

Elizabeth
Husband of a friend is a submarine sailor in the Navy. Said when you’re that far down everybody gets very tolerant of everybody’s predilections.

Kathryn
You would have to, damn.

Hannah
No part of me is built for that

Elizabeth
Maybe this is the southern accent I was thinking of?

Nathan
Most likely.

Elizabeth
Yeah dude shut up

Hannah
“Port” full rudder, surely?

Elizabeth
Whooo goosebumps
(and no idea, I never understand how navigation works on boats)

Nathan
Port is left, Starboard is right.

Elizabeth
But didn’t they reverse?

Hannah
Yeah, so “Right full rudder, reverse starboard” doesn’t make sense…?
Unless you command rudder with right and left and engines with port/starboard

… in Russian? Haha

Elizabeth
hahaha
you’re well out of my wheelhouse in any language

Nathan
Mine, too.

Hannah
Reversing the starboard engine makes sense for a right turn
… and with that I’m out of input

Kathryn
I’m really impressed because in someone else’s hands this naval strategy stuff can be REALLY dry.

Elizabeth
“And I will have a pickup truck.” awww

Hannah
Spoiler: He gets to live in Montana for a little while as his wife cheats on him in The Horse Whisperer

Nathan
And this is scene where we knew Borodin wouldn’t live to the end.

Elizabeth
haha

Hannah
Haha yes

Elizabeth
to both those comments, haha

Kathryn
Aw, my favorite scene there.
This bit is so wonderfully eerie

Elizabeth
The music is perfect

Kathryn
So his reason for defecting is because a military career in Russian was just neverending?

Elizabeth
Lost hope after his wife died, figured why not?

Hannah
Yall submariners need contacts, maybe?

Elizabeth
Having worn contacts, I’d go for glasses, contacts are a giant pain in the butt.
The more I learn about boats and helicopters the more I realize how crazy this stunt really is

Nathan
Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope!

Kathryn
Starbuck here is just fascinated by the helicopter sound effects

Elizabeth
My palms are sweating
Captain is not amused

Hannah
Deadliest Catch has filmed some absolutely perilous rescues in the Bering Sea

Elizabeth
Oh I’ll bet, yow

Kathryn
It’s not just the rough surf, it’s the cold, right?

Elizabeth
And bouncing off a metal hull

Hannah
LYING LIAR

Elizabeth
Hee

Hannah
The cold in the Bering for quick

Not sure if the north Atlantic is the same

Nathan
4 minutes, according to the carrier captain.

Elizabeth
Love that snap

Kathryn
I forgot how effective this was, with the two subs pacing next to each other like panthers.

Hannah
Yeeep
One ping only

Elizabeth
Blink once for yes..

Hannah
(Haha also the first ep of Hector vs the Future, where that sound is the “everything’s okay” alarm)

Elizabeth
Hee

Kathryn
Ballsy

Hannah
THING I’VE NEVER THOUGHT OF BEFORE: these dudes surely aren’t just walking around in their dress unis

Elizabeth
I can never tell with military, maybe they are?

Hannah
Six months underwater like “ALL OF MY MEDALS”

Elizabeth
Dudes, military, I’d believe it 😀

Kathryn
Especially Russian military

Hannah
I don’t have actual knowledge but I do believe the dress uni is special because not everyday?

Elizabeth
Though like I said, my friend’s submarine sailor husband suggested otherwise..

Probably was just for American audiences, Russian uniforms = Russian

Hannah
Haha yes, I’m sure that’s why and also I never thought of it before

If nothing else, I’m pretty sure they don’t wear medals in combat…

Elizabeth
True, asking for extra shrapnel

“And I, was never here.” One of his best lines.

Kathryn
Quite

Elizabeth
Tiny little boat and someone still gives me a cup of coffee? I’d be impressed.

Nathan
This is the Navy we’re talking about.

Kathryn
After that scene with the submersible in “The Scar” I’d be a big old Nope to any of this, coffee or no.

Elizabeth
Oh yeah, special kind of claustrophobia
All that money in the Navy and you still hit it with a hammer
Nice implication of translation again

Hannah
Skaarsgard about to insult Robin Williams before hitting on an MIT undergrad

Elizabeth
heh

Kathryn
I love how Tim Curry’s character is now the Captain’s cheerleader.

Elizabeth
Sorry Crawford I’d listen to James Bond too

Hannah
WHAT LANGUAGES ARE

Elizabeth
“What books did you write?”

Hannah
Vasily and Josh Lyman shootings pretty much same to my heart

Kathryn
He saved the Captain, bless him.

Elizabeth
Awwwwww

Hannah
I WOULD ALSO HAVE LIKED TO HAVE SEEN MONTANA WITH YOU, SIR
I cannae go any faster, captain

Elizabeth
“Most things in here don’t react too well to bullets”
I feel like that showed up in a later movie too..

Nathan

Elizabeth
Hee, though I could have been remembering his Connery impersonation there
GOOSEBUMPS AGAIN

Kathryn
Literally nailbiting

Elizabeth
Blown up with your own torpedo boom!

Hannah
Goodness, just delightful

Elizabeth
“You’ve lost another submarine?” Hee hee hee.

Kathryn
Eee hee hee

Hannah
Tbh I don’t think most people from Edinburgh sound like this…?

Elizabeth
Cultivated something all his own?

Kathryn
Fantastic, better than I’d remembered

Elizabeth
Holds up extremely well

Hannah
Well that was more fun than it had any right to be
(Also here’s one of the Deadliest Catch rescues…)

Elizabeth
Man that’s a hell of a thing getting a guy out of the water like that

Marian
Yea. That was great!. Liked it better the 2nd time. Last 30 min are chock full of heart stopping moments

Elizabeth
Very!!

Kathryn
